Rooflight upstands & kerbs in Rugby

A kerb that is a few millimetres out of square, or a little too low once the roof covering goes on, can stop a rooflight sealing properly. That is why upstand work in Rugby starts with measuring the opening, the roof build-up and the unit's kerb size together. The upstand is then built from treated timber, insulated and weathered into the membrane, felt or fibreglass. You get a written quote first and a note of the sizes it was built to.

Where our fitters travel

Covering Rugby means covering the people who live and work there, not a single postcode. We take on domestic and commercial jobs in CV21, CV22 and CV23, and are happy to quote further out in Daventry and Coventry. If your address sits between towns, tell us and we will confirm whether it falls in our normal area or needs travel set out separately on the quote.

On the day, we cover

  • Diagonals measured so the kerb is square before anything sits on it
  • Height set above the finished roof to the maker's stated minimum
  • Kerb sized from the maker's drawing, internal and external dimensions both checked
  • Size tolerance on the kerb — We build kerbs to a tight tolerance because rooflight glass is made to order and cannot be trimmed on site.
  • Height above the finished roof — We set the upstand so it stands at least 150 mm above the finished roof, measured from the top of any ballast, paving or walkway.

From arrival to clean-up

The fitters measure twice before cutting: the opening, the rooflight's kerb size and the finished roof level. The kerb is built, packed level or to the maker's fall, insulated and weathered into the roof covering. You are left with an upstand ready for the rooflight, and a note of the sizes it was built to.

Planning, building control and Rugby

Two sets of rules matter in England. Planning: a rooflight on a house is normally permitted development if it projects no more than 0.15 m and stays below the highest part of the roof, but flats, listed buildings and Article 4 areas need checking. Building regulations: new openings need approval for the structure and energy performance, and a replacement is a controlled fitting. We are not registered with a competent person scheme, so we notify replacements to building control with a building notice and put the council's fee on the quote.

Before you get in touch

What we cannot see, we have to guess, and guesses make quotes wider. So the more you send, the tighter the price. Useful: shots from the roof or garden, shots from the room underneath, a rough width and length, the roof finish, any access problems, and the product page if you have already ordered. Add the property postcode around CV21 and we will come back with a quote or a survey date.

Common questions in Rugby

Do you make good inside after fitting?

Yes, where the quote includes it. Internal finishing usually means lining the reveal with plasterboard, taping or skimming, and fitting trim where it meets the ceiling. Some people prefer their own plasterer or decorator to finish off, which is fine. The written quote spells out exactly where our work stops, so nobody is left guessing about who does what once the unit is in.

What is included in the price?

The written quote lists it line by line. Typically that covers fitting labour, fixings, sealants, membrane or flashing materials, any upstand work, internal finishing if agreed, and taking away the waste. For supply and fit, the unit itself is included too. Scaffold, lifting gear and any third-party fees, where needed, are shown separately so you can see what each part of the job costs.

Can you remove and dispose of the old rooflight?

Yes. Taking out the old unit is part of any replacement job, and it leaves with the rest of the waste unless you ask to keep it. Old domes, glass and frames go through proper waste routes. If removal turns up a rotten kerb or damaged decking, we show you what we have found and agree the repair with you before going any further.

Send a few photos and your CV21 postcode, and we will put together a written quote for the job.
