Rooflight upstands & kerbs in Fulwood

An upstand is the timber kerb a flat-roof rooflight sits on, and most fitting problems start there. Each maker sets the kerb size, the minimum height above the finished roof and whether the kerb should be level or built to a fall. We build upstands in Fulwood to those figures for the rooflight you have chosen, insulate the faces that need it and dress the roof membrane up and over so the kerb is weathertight. Every job is quoted in writing first.

Where our fitters travel

Jobs across S11, S17 and S10 are part of our normal cover for Fulwood. We are not an office on the high street. Our fitting teams come out to the property from wherever they are working that week. Neighbouring places such as Sheffield and Dronfield are covered on the same terms, so a house on the edge of town is no harder to book than one in the centre.

What the job includes

  • Treated timber frame fixed down to the deck and joists
  • Height set above the finished roof to the maker's stated minimum
  • Diagonals measured so the kerb is square before anything sits on it
  • Height above the finished roof — We set the upstand so it stands at least 150 mm above the finished roof, measured from the top of any ballast, paving or walkway.
  • Fall built in or level — We confirm whether your rooflight needs the kerb to provide a fall or should sit level.

From arrival to clean-up

The fitters measure twice before cutting: the opening, the rooflight's kerb size and the finished roof level. The kerb is built, packed level or to the maker's fall, insulated and weathered into the roof covering. You are left with an upstand ready for the rooflight, and a note of the sizes it was built to.

Planning, building control and Fulwood

In England, a new rooflight opening generally needs building regulations approval because the roof structure is altered and the glazing must meet energy rules: 2.2 W/m²K for a rooflight in an existing home, or 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B) for a roof window. Planning is often not needed on a house: permitted development covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof slope and sit below the highest part of the roof. Flats, listed buildings and areas with an Article 4 direction are different, so we check your address first.

Help us quote accurately

Each detail you send takes a question off our list. Photos inside and out show the opening and the ceiling. Rough measurements tell us the unit size. The roof covering tells us how it will be sealed in. Access notes tell us whether a tower or scaffold is needed. A product link, if you have one, lets us check it against the opening. Your postcode, S11 or nearby, confirms travel.

Common questions in Fulwood

Can you fit a rooflight in winter or when it is raining?

Yes, within limits. Cold is less of a problem than wet, because membranes, primers and sealants need a dry surface to bond. We plan fitting days around the forecast and may move a date if heavy rain is due. If the roof has to be opened up, it is not left overnight without a temporary weather seal, so the room below stays dry while the work is finished.

Do you make good inside after fitting?

Yes, where the quote includes it. Internal finishing usually means lining the reveal with plasterboard, taping or skimming, and fitting trim where it meets the ceiling. Some people prefer their own plasterer or decorator to finish off, which is fine. The written quote spells out exactly where our work stops, so nobody is left guessing about who does what once the unit is in.

Do I need planning permission for a rooflight in Fulwood?

Often not. Many rooflights fall under permitted development, provided they do not project beyond the national limit and meet the other conditions that apply in England. Conservation areas, listed buildings and some flats are different and may need consent. Because the rules depend on the property, we confirm what is likely to apply at your address and point you to the planning authority where an application is needed.
