Rooflight upstands & kerbs in Shropshire

Across Shropshire we fit rooflight upstands for homeowners, builders, roofers and commercial clients. The trade side matters: an extension company with jobs running in several of the 4 towns we list does not want to coordinate a different fitter for each. We can take the rooflight element of every site, fitted to the maker's instructions and left ready for the next trade. Domestic customers get the same fitting standard, quoted in writing before work begins.

Guide ranges for labour and materials, rooflight not included. Your price is fixed in a written quote after we have seen photos or surveyed. Towns we list in Shropshire

From the larger towns to the smaller places in between, we take on rooflight fitting across Shropshire. The process is the same for a terrace, a farmhouse extension or an industrial unit: details first, written quote second, fitting day third. Remote and island addresses in England, where they arise, are covered by arrangement, and we tell you that before quoting.

What's included

  • Insulation fitted to the upstand faces to limit heat loss
  • Roof membrane turned up, bonded and finished at the kerb top
  • Diagonals measured so the kerb is square before anything sits on it
  • Fall built in or level — We confirm whether your rooflight needs the kerb to provide a fall or should sit level.
  • Size tolerance on the kerb — We build kerbs to a tight tolerance because rooflight glass is made to order and cannot be trimmed on site.

Rules that apply in England

Replacing a rooflight in an English home is a controlled fitting: it has to be self-certified by a scheme-registered installer or notified to building control. We are not registered with a competent person scheme, so replacements we fit are notified with a building notice, and the new unit has to meet current energy limits. Adding a new one usually means a building regulations application, because joists or rafters are trimmed. On the planning side, most house rooflights are permitted development if they project 0.15 m or less; on a side slope the glass must be obscured and fixed unless the opening part is over 1.7 m above the floor.

Common questions in Shropshire

Can you fit a rooflight in winter or when it is raining?

Yes, within limits. Cold is less of a problem than wet, because membranes, primers and sealants need a dry surface to bond. We plan fitting days around the forecast and may move a date if heavy rain is due. If the roof has to be opened up, it is not left overnight without a temporary weather seal, so the room below stays dry while the work is finished.

Do I need planning permission for a rooflight in Shropshire?

Often not. Many rooflights fall under permitted development, provided they do not project beyond the national limit and meet the other conditions that apply in England. Conservation areas, listed buildings and some flats are different and may need consent. Because the rules depend on the property, we confirm what is likely to apply at your address and point you to the planning authority where an application is needed.

Can you remove and dispose of the old rooflight?

Yes. Taking out the old unit is part of any replacement job, and it leaves with the rest of the waste unless you ask to keep it. Old domes, glass and frames go through proper waste routes. If removal turns up a rotten kerb or damaged decking, we show you what we have found and agree the repair with you before going any further.
