Sun tunnel installation in Sale

Sun tunnel installation in Sale comes down to what happens around the glass. A good unit sat on a poor upstand, or with the membrane or flashing cut short at the corners, will still let water in. We fit each sun tunnel to the maker's instructions for fixings, packers and sealant, for homes and businesses across Sale and the rest of Greater Manchester. That covers supply and fit, fit-only for a unit you already own, and swapping out a tired one. Every job starts with a written quote, so the price and scope are clear before anyone climbs a ladder.

Fitting across Sale and nearby

Sale and the districts around it, M33, M32 and M21, all sit inside our working area. So does the ground between Sale and Stretford (2 miles), and on towards Urmston (2 miles). When a fitting team is booked, their travel is already in the quoted price, so it does not turn up as a surprise line on the final bill.

Already bought your unit?

There are two ways to do this. Supply and fit means we source a sun tunnel that suits your roof and install it, so one company answers for both the product choice and the fitting. Fit-only means you buy the unit and we install it. With fit-only, the product warranty stays with the maker or seller, and our written guarantee covers the fitting work. Both routes get the same checks on the opening, the upstand and the maker's instructions before anything is fixed.

What we do on the day

  • Rigid or flexible tube run and joined, with as few bends as possible
  • Dome fixed and sealed on top of the flashing
  • Ceiling opening cut neatly and the diffuser fitted
  • Tube size — We match the tube size to the room and the roof.
  • Length and bends in the tube — We plan the shortest, straightest route we can between the roof and the ceiling.

How a fitting day runs

Fitting days start with a look at the sky. If rain is due, the order of work changes so the roof is never left open to it. A typical day for a sun tunnel runs like this: set up access, protect the room, open up the roof or prepare the existing kerb or frame, check sizes, fix, seal, then finish inside. On jobs that take more than a day, the opening is weather-sealed overnight. The last hour goes on tidying, waste removal and a walk-round with you.

Planning and building rules in England

England's rules in short: permitted development usually covers a rooflight on a house roof provided it doesn't stick out more than 0.15 m or rise above the ridge, though a listed building always needs consent and some streets have Article 4 directions. Building regulations apply to new openings, and replacements go through building control; as we are not registered with a competent person scheme, we use a building notice and show the fee on the quote. The energy limit for rooflights in existing homes is 2.2 W/m²K, and the 2026 Approved Document L, in force from 24 March 2027, keeps that figure.

Getting a price from photos

What we cannot see, we have to guess, and guesses make quotes wider. So the more you send, the tighter the price. Useful: shots from the roof or garden, shots from the room underneath, a rough width and length, the roof finish, any access problems, and the product page if you have already ordered. Add the property postcode around M33 and we will come back with a quote or a survey date.

Common questions in Sale

Will my new sun tunnel leak?

A correctly fitted unit should not. Leaks usually trace back to the detail around the frame: an upstand that is too low, a membrane or flashing that is not dressed properly, sealant applied to a damp surface, or water ponding against the kerb. We fit to the maker's instructions and check each of those points. The fitting carries a written workmanship guarantee, with its terms set out on your quote.

Do you offer trade rates for builders and roofers?

We carry out subcontract fitting for builders, roofers, extension companies and commercial contractors. Pricing is per job or per schedule of units, agreed in writing before we start. We can work to your programme, fit on your upstand or build our own, and leave the opening ready for the next trade. Send drawings or a unit schedule and we will come back with a trade quote.

What if my roof opening is the wrong size for the sun tunnel?

We find out before the fitting day, not on it. If the opening is slightly out, it can usually be adjusted by trimming or by packing out the upstand. If it is a long way off, the choice is between altering the opening and changing the unit. Bear in mind that rooflights are often sold by builder's opening size rather than external size, so check which one your measurement refers to.
