Sun tunnel installation in Belfast

Already bought a sun tunnel, or still deciding which one to get? Both are fine. For sun tunnel installation in Belfast we either source a suitable unit and install it, or fit the one waiting in your garage. Fit-only jobs are usually priced from your photos and measurements, while supply-and-fit and replacement jobs get a free survey first. Whichever route you take, the opening, the upstand or flashing, and the delivery are checked before anything is fixed down. Properties in BT1 and the surrounding districts are covered on the same terms.

Areas around Belfast we cover

Jobs across BT1, BT2 and BT7 are part of our normal cover for Belfast. We are not an office on the high street. Our fitting teams come out to the property from wherever they are working that week. Neighbouring places such as Castlereagh and Newtownabbey are covered on the same terms, so a house on the edge of town is no harder to book than one in the centre.

Already bought your unit?

Supply and fit tends to suit people who would rather not pick a unit from a catalogue. We look at the roof, the opening and how you use the room, then put a sun tunnel on the quote that fits all three. Fit-only suits people who already know what they want, or have one on site. We are happy with either. The difference is who stands behind what: on fit-only, the maker or retailer covers the product, and our workmanship guarantee covers the installation.

What the job includes

  • Route through the loft checked for joists, cables and pipes
  • Ceiling opening cut neatly and the diffuser fitted
  • Dust cleared from the room below and the loft
  • Rigid or flexible tube — We check whether a rigid tube will fit the route before falling back on a flexible one.
  • Condensation in cold lofts — We insulate the tube where it passes through a cold loft.

What happens on the day

On the day, you need to be in at the start and at the end. In between, the fitters get on with it. They will want the room below cleared where possible, a parking spot if you have one, and somewhere to set the unit down safely. After checking the opening and the upstand or flashing, they fix a sun tunnel, seal it and finish the inside. Packaging and any old unit leave with them unless the quote says otherwise.

Planning, building control and Belfast

In Northern Ireland, the energy standard for a new or replacement rooflight or roof window in an existing home is WER Band C or a U-value of 1.6 W/m²K, under Technical Booklet F1. Cutting a new opening alters the roof structure, so a building control application is expected; confirm with the council's building control team. Planning permitted development covers many rooflights on houses if they stay below the ridge, project no more than 15 cm on a road-facing slope and sit at least 0.5 m from the ridge, eaves and verges.

What to send for a quick quote

Start with your phone. Take a picture of the roof where the unit goes or already sits, then one from inside looking up. Measure what you can, even roughly. Tell us what the roof is covered with and how a fitter would reach it: ladder, garden access or scaffold. Bought it already? Send the link or spec. Add your full postcode, for example in BT1, and we can price it.

Common questions in Belfast

Do you cover Belfast?

Yes. Fitters travel to addresses in Belfast and the surrounding districts, including BT1. We do not run an office there; the survey and the fitting happen at your property. A few island and remote postcodes are covered by arrangement; if yours is one, we confirm travel and dates before quoting.

Do you make good inside after fitting?

Yes, where the quote includes it. Internal finishing usually means lining the reveal with plasterboard, taping or skimming, and fitting trim where it meets the ceiling. Some people prefer their own plasterer or decorator to finish off, which is fine. The written quote spells out exactly where our work stops, so nobody is left guessing about who does what once the unit is in.

How long does fitting take?

Fitting a sun tunnel into an existing, correctly sized opening is often a day's work. New openings take longer, because joists or rafters need trimming, an upstand or flashing has to be built or fitted, and the inside needs finishing. Large units that need lifting gear, and days lost to rain, can stretch things further. Your written quote gives a realistic estimate for your roof.
