Rooflight replacement in Cardiff

Rooflight replacement in Cardiff comes down to what happens around the glass. A good unit sat on a poor upstand, or with the membrane or flashing cut short at the corners, will still let water in. We fit each replacement rooflight to the maker's instructions for fixings, packers and sealant, for homes and businesses across Cardiff and the rest of Cardiff & the Vale. That covers supply and fit, fit-only for a unit you already own, and swapping out a tired one. Every job starts with a written quote, so the price and scope are clear before anyone climbs a ladder.

Is your address covered?

Jobs across CF10, CF11 and CF24 are part of our normal cover for Cardiff. We are not an office on the high street. Our fitting teams come out to the property from wherever they are working that week. Neighbouring places such as Penarth and Caerphilly are covered on the same terms, so a house on the edge of town is no harder to book than one in the centre.

Fit-only or supply and fit

Which works out better, buying your own or letting us supply? It depends on what you value. Buying your own gives you control of the product and what you pay for it. Letting us supply puts the whole job, unit and fitting, under one written quote. On a customer-supplied unit we still measure it against the opening, look at the upstand, and inspect the condition it arrived in. Warranty on the product sits with whoever sold it, while the fitting carries our own guarantee.

What we do on the day

  • Old rooflight or dome unscrewed, lifted out and taken away for disposal
  • Internal reveal made good where the old trim or plaster was damaged
  • Packers, an adaptor or a new insulated upstand where the old kerb falls short
  • Energy rules for the new unit — We make sure the replacement meets the current energy limit, not just the old unit's performance.
  • Leaks that are not the rooflight — We look at the roof around the unit before blaming the rooflight.

How a fitting day runs

Morning first: the team arrives, introduces itself and walks through the job with you. Dust sheets go down in the room below and along the route in. Then the opening and upstand, or the flashing on a pitched roof, are checked against the unit's measurements. A replacement rooflight goes in, is fixed to the maker's pattern and sealed into the roof covering. Inside, the reveal is finished as quoted. Before leaving, the team clears debris and talks you through what was done. Most jobs of this type take one day.

Planning and building rules in Wales

In Wales, a new rooflight opening generally needs building regulations approval, and a replacement needs either a scheme-registered installer's certificate or a building notice to the council. We are not registered with a scheme, so we use a building notice and show the fee on the quote. Rooflights must meet 2.2 W/m²K and roof windows 1.4 W/m²K. Planning is tighter than in England: rooflights are not permitted development in conservation areas, National Parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty or World Heritage Sites, so we check your address before quoting.

Getting a price from photos

Keep it simple. Two or three photos, outside and inside. Approximate sizes. What the roof is made of. Anything awkward about getting up there, such as a conservatory below, a narrow side path or no parking. If you bought the rooflight online, the link or model name. Then your postcode in or around CF10. That is enough for a first price.

Common questions in Cardiff

Do you make good inside after fitting?

Yes, where the quote includes it. Internal finishing usually means lining the reveal with plasterboard, taping or skimming, and fitting trim where it meets the ceiling. Some people prefer their own plasterer or decorator to finish off, which is fine. The written quote spells out exactly where our work stops, so nobody is left guessing about who does what once the unit is in.

Can you fit the replacement rooflight I bought online?

Yes, fit-only is one of our core services. Send the product link or spec, photos of the roof and rough sizes, and we can usually price it from those. Before fitting we check the delivery for damage, which should be reported to the seller, plus the size against the builder's opening and the upstand height. The product warranty stays with the maker or seller, and our guarantee covers the fitting.

How long does fitting take?

Fitting a replacement rooflight into an existing, correctly sized opening is often a day's work. New openings take longer, because joists or rafters need trimming, an upstand or flashing has to be built or fitted, and the inside needs finishing. Large units that need lifting gear, and days lost to rain, can stretch things further. Your written quote gives a realistic estimate for your roof.
