Areas around Cardiff we cover
Covering Cardiff means covering the people who live and work there, not a single postcode. We take on domestic and commercial jobs in CF10, CF11 and CF24, and are happy to quote further out in Penarth and Caerphilly. If your address sits between towns, tell us and we will confirm whether it falls in our normal area or needs travel set out separately on the quote.
Already bought your unit?
Supply and fit tends to suit people who would rather not pick a unit from a catalogue. We look at the roof, the opening and how you use the room, then put a roof lantern on the quote that fits all three. Fit-only suits people who already know what they want, or have one on site. We are happy with either. The difference is who stands behind what: on fit-only, the maker or retailer covers the product, and our workmanship guarantee covers the installation.
On the day, we cover
- Caps, end closures and ridge trims fitted and sealed
- Upstand checked for size, level and square before the kit is opened
- Roof membrane checked where it meets the lantern frame
- Heat and glare — We talk through the glass options before you order a large lantern.
- Lanterns and planning — We check whether your lantern can go in without a planning application.
What happens on the day
On the day, you need to be in at the start and at the end. In between, the fitters get on with it. They will want the room below cleared where possible, a parking spot if you have one, and somewhere to set the unit down safely. After checking the opening and the upstand or flashing, they fix a roof lantern, seal it and finish the inside. Packaging and any old unit leave with them unless the quote says otherwise.
Regulations for Cardiff properties
For a Welsh home, start with where the house is. In a conservation area, National Park, AONB or World Heritage Site, a rooflight needs planning permission; outside those, permitted development usually covers one that projects 150 mm or less. Side-facing roof windows within 10.5 m of a boundary must be obscure-glazed and fixed. New openings need building regulations approval, and replacements we fit are notified with a building notice, as we are not registered with a competent person scheme. We confirm all of this for your address.
What to send for a quick quote
What we cannot see, we have to guess, and guesses make quotes wider. So the more you send, the tighter the price. Useful: shots from the roof or garden, shots from the room underneath, a rough width and length, the roof finish, any access problems, and the product page if you have already ordered. Add the property postcode around CF10 and we will come back with a quote or a survey date.
Common questions in Cardiff
Can you fit the roof lantern I bought online?
Yes, fit-only is one of our core services. Send the product link or spec, photos of the roof and rough sizes, and we can usually price it from those. Before fitting we check the delivery for damage, which should be reported to the seller, plus the size against the builder's opening and the upstand height. The product warranty stays with the maker or seller, and our guarantee covers the fitting.
What if my roof opening is the wrong size for the roof lantern?
We find out before the fitting day, not on it. If the opening is slightly out, it can usually be adjusted by trimming or by packing out the upstand. If it is a long way off, the choice is between altering the opening and changing the unit. Bear in mind that rooflights are often sold by builder's opening size rather than external size, so check which one your measurement refers to.
Do I need planning permission for a rooflight in Cardiff?
Often not. Many rooflights fall under permitted development, provided they do not project beyond the national limit and meet the other conditions that apply in Wales. Conservation areas, listed buildings and some flats are different and may need consent. Because the rules depend on the property, we confirm what is likely to apply at your address and point you to the planning authority where an application is needed.
Tell us your postcode, CF10 or close by, and what you want fitted. We will reply with the next steps and a quote.
