Rooflight upstands & kerbs in Devizes

An upstand is the timber kerb a flat-roof rooflight sits on, and most fitting problems start there. Each maker sets the kerb size, the minimum height above the finished roof and whether the kerb should be level or built to a fall. We build upstands in Devizes to those figures for the rooflight you have chosen, insulate the faces that need it and dress the roof membrane up and over so the kerb is weathertight. Every job is quoted in writing first.

Guide ranges for labour and materials, rooflight not included. Your price is fixed in a written quote after we have seen photos or surveyed. Scaffold, access towers or a crane are priced separately if the job needs them, and building control fees, where a job needs them, are shown as their own line.

Where our fitters travel

If you also own a property or a business unit in Calne, Melksham or Chippenham, that is no problem. We can survey and quote both, and where it suits, line the fitting days up together. Every address is reached by fitters travelling to it from their current jobs, and SN10, SN11 and SN12 sit comfortably within that pattern.

What we do on the day

  • Diagonals measured so the kerb is square before anything sits on it
  • Insulation fitted to the upstand faces to limit heat loss
  • Roof membrane turned up, bonded and finished at the kerb top
  • Size tolerance on the kerb — We build kerbs to a tight tolerance because rooflight glass is made to order and cannot be trimmed on site.
  • Height above the finished roof — We set the upstand so it stands at least 150 mm above the finished roof, measured from the top of any ballast, paving or walkway.

What happens on the day

Building an upstand starts with the rooflight's own drawing: its kerb size, height above the finished roof and fall. The team sets the timber out to those figures, checks the diagonals, insulates the outer faces and dresses the membrane up and over. If the rooflight is going on the same day, it is fitted next; if not, the kerb is protected until it does.

Planning, building control and Devizes

Replacing a rooflight in an English home is a controlled fitting: it has to be self-certified by a scheme-registered installer or notified to building control. We are not registered with a competent person scheme, so replacements we fit are notified with a building notice, and the new unit has to meet current energy limits. Adding a new one usually means a building regulations application, because joists or rafters are trimmed. On the planning side, most house rooflights are permitted development if they project 0.15 m or less; on a side slope the glass must be obscured and fixed unless the opening part is over 1.7 m above the floor.

Before you get in touch

What we cannot see, we have to guess, and guesses make quotes wider. So the more you send, the tighter the price. Useful: shots from the roof or garden, shots from the room underneath, a rough width and length, the roof finish, any access problems, and the product page if you have already ordered. Add the property postcode around SN10 and we will come back with a quote or a survey date.

Common questions in Devizes

Do you cover Devizes?

Yes. Fitters travel to addresses in Devizes and the surrounding districts, including SN10. We do not run an office there; the survey and the fitting happen at your property. A few island and remote postcodes are covered by arrangement; if yours is one, we confirm travel and dates before quoting.

Do you need scaffolding to fit a rooflight?

Not always. Single-storey roofs can often be reached safely with ladders, a tower or edge protection. Higher roofs, steep pitches and large units usually need scaffold or a mobile platform, and heavy glass may need a crane. We assess access from your photos or at the survey, and any scaffold or lifting cost is shown as its own line on the written quote.

Do you offer trade rates for builders and roofers?

We carry out subcontract fitting for builders, roofers, extension companies and commercial contractors. Pricing is per job or per schedule of units, agreed in writing before we start. We can work to your programme, fit on your upstand or build our own, and leave the opening ready for the next trade. Send drawings or a unit schedule and we will come back with a trade quote.

Ask for a quote for your Devizes roof. Survey dates are offered based on fitter availability once you are happy with the price.
