Rooflight upstands & kerbs in St Helens

Replacing an old dome or a failed rooflight often means the kerb underneath has to change too: it may be rotten, too low for the new unit or the wrong size. We strip back what is needed, build a new upstand in St Helens to the new unit's dimensions, insulate it and dress the roof covering up to it. Where only part of the kerb has failed, we say so and price the smaller repair. The scope is set out in a written quote before work starts.

Where our fitters travel

Looking at a property near St Helens but not quite in it? We work across WA10, WA9 and WA11 and outwards to Haydock, Prescot and Ashton in Makerfield. Give us the full postcode when you get in touch, because access, parking and the route for a large unit all depend on the exact street. Those details shape the quote for any job around St Helens.

What the job includes

  • Insulation fitted to the upstand faces to limit heat loss
  • Treated timber frame fixed down to the deck and joists
  • Fall built into the kerb where the rooflight needs one
  • Size tolerance on the kerb — We build kerbs to a tight tolerance because rooflight glass is made to order and cannot be trimmed on site.
  • Fall built in or level — We confirm whether your rooflight needs the kerb to provide a fall or should sit level.

A typical installation day

Building an upstand starts with the rooflight's own drawing: its kerb size, height above the finished roof and fall. The team sets the timber out to those figures, checks the diagonals, insulates the outer faces and dresses the membrane up and over. If the rooflight is going on the same day, it is fitted next; if not, the kerb is protected until it does.

Planning and building rules in England

In England, a new rooflight opening generally needs building regulations approval because the roof structure is altered and the glazing must meet energy rules: 2.2 W/m²K for a rooflight in an existing home, or 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B) for a roof window. Planning is often not needed on a house: permitted development covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof slope and sit below the highest part of the roof. Flats, listed buildings and areas with an Article 4 direction are different, so we check your address first.

Before you get in touch

Each detail you send takes a question off our list. Photos inside and out show the opening and the ceiling. Rough measurements tell us the unit size. The roof covering tells us how it will be sealed in. Access notes tell us whether a tower or scaffold is needed. A product link, if you have one, lets us check it against the opening. Your postcode, WA10 or nearby, confirms travel.

Common questions in St Helens

How does payment work?

Payment terms are set out on your written quote before you accept it. Depending on the job, that may mean a deposit, stage payments for larger work, or payment on completion. The contract is with S&K Property Investments and Improvement Ltd, part of the S&K Group. Nothing is added without your agreement: if something unexpected comes up, we discuss it and agree any change before carrying on.

Does a rooflight need building regulations approval?

A new opening usually needs building regulations approval. A replacement is a controlled fitting: it must be self-certified by an installer registered with a competent person scheme or notified to building control. We are not registered with a scheme, so replacements we fit are notified to building control with a building notice, and the council's fee is shown on your quote.

Do you need scaffolding to fit a rooflight?

Not always. Single-storey roofs can often be reached safely with ladders, a tower or edge protection. Higher roofs, steep pitches and large units usually need scaffold or a mobile platform, and heavy glass may need a crane. We assess access from your photos or at the survey, and any scaffold or lifting cost is shown as its own line on the written quote.
