Rooflight upstands & kerbs in Huyton

Replacing an old dome or a failed rooflight often means the kerb underneath has to change too: it may be rotten, too low for the new unit or the wrong size. We strip back what is needed, build a new upstand in Huyton to the new unit's dimensions, insulate it and dress the roof covering up to it. Where only part of the kerb has failed, we say so and price the smaller repair. The scope is set out in a written quote before work starts.

Coverage in and around Huyton

Fitters travel to the job, so the address is what counts. In Huyton that means postcode districts L36, L27 and L14, and the same teams can just as easily take on work in Prescot, about 2 miles away, or Halewood at roughly 4 miles. Survey and fitting dates are offered according to fitter availability, and travel is built into the quote rather than added later.

On the day, we cover

  • Fall built into the kerb where the rooflight needs one
  • Kerb sized from the maker's drawing, internal and external dimensions both checked
  • Insulation fitted to the upstand faces to limit heat loss
  • Height above the finished roof — We set the upstand so it stands at least 150 mm above the finished roof, measured from the top of any ballast, paving or walkway.
  • Roof covering compatibility — We check what the roof is covered in before choosing how the membrane meets the kerb.

Fitting your rooflight upstand, step by step

The fitters measure twice before cutting: the opening, the rooflight's kerb size and the finished roof level. The kerb is built, packed level or to the maker's fall, insulated and weathered into the roof covering. You are left with an upstand ready for the rooflight, and a note of the sizes it was built to.

Planning, building control and Huyton

Two sets of rules matter in England. Planning: a rooflight on a house is normally permitted development if it projects no more than 0.15 m and stays below the highest part of the roof, but flats, listed buildings and Article 4 areas need checking. Building regulations: new openings need approval for the structure and energy performance, and a replacement is a controlled fitting. We are not registered with a competent person scheme, so we notify replacements to building control with a building notice and put the council's fee on the quote.

Help us quote accurately

What we cannot see, we have to guess, and guesses make quotes wider. So the more you send, the tighter the price. Useful: shots from the roof or garden, shots from the room underneath, a rough width and length, the roof finish, any access problems, and the product page if you have already ordered. Add the property postcode around L36 and we will come back with a quote or a survey date.

Common questions in Huyton

Do you offer trade rates for builders and roofers?

We carry out subcontract fitting for builders, roofers, extension companies and commercial contractors. Pricing is per job or per schedule of units, agreed in writing before we start. We can work to your programme, fit on your upstand or build our own, and leave the opening ready for the next trade. Send drawings or a unit schedule and we will come back with a trade quote.

What is included in the price?

The written quote lists it line by line. Typically that covers fitting labour, fixings, sealants, membrane or flashing materials, any upstand work, internal finishing if agreed, and taking away the waste. For supply and fit, the unit itself is included too. Scaffold, lifting gear and any third-party fees, where needed, are shown separately so you can see what each part of the job costs.

Can you remove and dispose of the old rooflight?

Yes. Taking out the old unit is part of any replacement job, and it leaves with the rest of the waste unless you ask to keep it. Old domes, glass and frames go through proper waste routes. If removal turns up a rotten kerb or damaged decking, we show you what we have found and agree the repair with you before going any further.
