Rooflight upstands & kerbs in Enfield

Replacing an old dome or a failed rooflight often means the kerb underneath has to change too: it may be rotten, too low for the new unit or the wrong size. We strip back what is needed, build a new upstand in Enfield to the new unit's dimensions, insulate it and dress the roof covering up to it. Where only part of the kerb has failed, we say so and price the smaller repair. The scope is set out in a written quote before work starts.

Guide ranges for labour and materials, rooflight not included. Your price is fixed in a written quote after we have seen photos or surveyed. Scaffold, access towers or a crane are priced separately if the job needs them, and building control fees, where a job needs them, are shown as their own line.

Is your address covered?

Our fitters come to you. For Enfield that covers EN2, EN1 and N21, plus nearby Ponders End and Edmonton. We do not keep a yard or showroom in the area, and you do not need to visit one. The survey happens at your property or, for fit-only work, from the photos you send. Dates follow fitter availability, which we confirm when you accept the quote.

On the day, we cover

  • Fall built into the kerb where the rooflight needs one
  • Roof membrane turned up, bonded and finished at the kerb top
  • Insulation fitted to the upstand faces to limit heat loss
  • Roof covering compatibility — We check what the roof is covered in before choosing how the membrane meets the kerb.
  • Size tolerance on the kerb — We build kerbs to a tight tolerance because rooflight glass is made to order and cannot be trimmed on site.

Fitting your rooflight upstand, step by step

On the day, the fitters check the opening and the roof deck around it, then cut and fix treated timber to the maker's kerb size, square and level, with any fall the rooflight needs built in. Insulation goes on the faces that need it, and the roof membrane is turned up and dressed so the kerb is weathertight before anyone leaves. Most upstand jobs take half a day to a day.

Do you need permission in Enfield?

In England, a new rooflight opening generally needs building regulations approval because the roof structure is altered and the glazing must meet energy rules: 2.2 W/m²K for a rooflight in an existing home, or 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B) for a roof window. Planning is often not needed on a house: permitted development covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof slope and sit below the highest part of the roof. Flats, listed buildings and areas with an Article 4 direction are different, so we check your address first.

Before you get in touch

Each detail you send takes a question off our list. Photos inside and out show the opening and the ceiling. Rough measurements tell us the unit size. The roof covering tells us how it will be sealed in. Access notes tell us whether a tower or scaffold is needed. A product link, if you have one, lets us check it against the opening. Your postcode, EN2 or nearby, confirms travel.

Common questions in Enfield

Do you need scaffolding to fit a rooflight?

Not always. Single-storey roofs can often be reached safely with ladders, a tower or edge protection. Higher roofs, steep pitches and large units usually need scaffold or a mobile platform, and heavy glass may need a crane. We assess access from your photos or at the survey, and any scaffold or lifting cost is shown as its own line on the written quote.

Do you cover Enfield?

Yes. Fitters travel to addresses in Enfield and the surrounding districts, including EN2. We do not run an office there; the survey and the fitting happen at your property. A few island and remote postcodes are covered by arrangement; if yours is one, we confirm travel and dates before quoting.

Do you make good inside after fitting?

Yes, where the quote includes it. Internal finishing usually means lining the reveal with plasterboard, taping or skimming, and fitting trim where it meets the ceiling. Some people prefer their own plasterer or decorator to finish off, which is fine. The written quote spells out exactly where our work stops, so nobody is left guessing about who does what once the unit is in.

Send a few photos and your EN2 postcode, and we will put together a written quote for the job.
