Rooflight upstands & kerbs in Hull

An upstand is the timber kerb a flat-roof rooflight sits on, and most fitting problems start there. Each maker sets the kerb size, the minimum height above the finished roof and whether the kerb should be level or built to a fall. We build upstands in Hull to those figures for the rooflight you have chosen, insulate the faces that need it and dress the roof membrane up and over so the kerb is weathertight. Every job is quoted in writing first.

Coverage in and around Hull

Covering Hull means covering the people who live and work there, not a single postcode. We take on domestic and commercial jobs in HU1, HU2 and HU3, and are happy to quote further out in Beverley and Brough. If your address sits between towns, tell us and we will confirm whether it falls in our normal area or needs travel set out separately on the quote.

Included in the work

  • Roof membrane turned up, bonded and finished at the kerb top
  • Fall built into the kerb where the rooflight needs one
  • Kerb sized from the maker's drawing, internal and external dimensions both checked
  • Fall built in or level — We confirm whether your rooflight needs the kerb to provide a fall or should sit level.
  • Energy limit for site-built kerbs — We insulate upstands to meet the limit for site-built upstands, which is 0.35 W/m²K in England and Wales.

How a fitting day runs

On the day, the fitters check the opening and the roof deck around it, then cut and fix treated timber to the maker's kerb size, square and level, with any fall the rooflight needs built in. Insulation goes on the faces that need it, and the roof membrane is turned up and dressed so the kerb is weathertight before anyone leaves. Most upstand jobs take half a day to a day.

Do you need permission in Hull?

England's rules in short: permitted development usually covers a rooflight on a house roof provided it doesn't stick out more than 0.15 m or rise above the ridge, though a listed building always needs consent and some streets have Article 4 directions. Building regulations apply to new openings, and replacements go through building control; as we are not registered with a competent person scheme, we use a building notice and show the fee on the quote. The energy limit for rooflights in existing homes is 2.2 W/m²K, and the 2026 Approved Document L, in force from 24 March 2027, keeps that figure.

Getting a price from photos

Each detail you send takes a question off our list. Photos inside and out show the opening and the ceiling. Rough measurements tell us the unit size. The roof covering tells us how it will be sealed in. Access notes tell us whether a tower or scaffold is needed. A product link, if you have one, lets us check it against the opening. Your postcode, HU1 or nearby, confirms travel.

Common questions in Hull

What is included in the price?

The written quote lists it line by line. Typically that covers fitting labour, fixings, sealants, membrane or flashing materials, any upstand work, internal finishing if agreed, and taking away the waste. For supply and fit, the unit itself is included too. Scaffold, lifting gear and any third-party fees, where needed, are shown separately so you can see what each part of the job costs.

Do I need planning permission for a rooflight in Hull?

Often not. Many rooflights fall under permitted development, provided they do not project beyond the national limit and meet the other conditions that apply in England. Conservation areas, listed buildings and some flats are different and may need consent. Because the rules depend on the property, we confirm what is likely to apply at your address and point you to the planning authority where an application is needed.

Do you need scaffolding to fit a rooflight?

Not always. Single-storey roofs can often be reached safely with ladders, a tower or edge protection. Higher roofs, steep pitches and large units usually need scaffold or a mobile platform, and heavy glass may need a crane. We assess access from your photos or at the survey, and any scaffold or lifting cost is shown as its own line on the written quote.
