Rooflight installers in Hull

Every rooflight job in Hull has the same core: a correctly sized opening, an upstand or flashing that suits the roof, a unit fixed to the maker's instructions, and a weathertight seal. Around that core the work varies. Fit-only installs, replacements on existing kerbs, new openings with joist trimming, roof lanterns over extensions, roof windows in pitched roofs, and subcontract fitting for trades working in the area. We handle all of it across East Riding of Yorkshire, with a written quote before work starts and a workmanship guarantee whose terms are on that quote.

Specialist fitting or a general builder

A general builder can frame an opening perfectly well. The trouble usually comes at the top of it. Rooflight makers specify a minimum upstand height above the finished roof, a minimum pitch on the glass, and particular fixings and packers. Miss one of those and the unit can hold water, leak at the corners, or put its product warranty at risk. A fitting specialist works to those figures and checks where each maker's instructions differ. That is the part of the job worth handing over.

Is your Hull address covered?

From the centre of Hull out to its edges, postcode districts HU1, HU2 and HU3 are all standard cover. The same applies to neighbouring Beverley, about 8 miles off, and Brough, around 10 miles away. If you are further out, towards Grimsby or beyond, send the postcode and we will confirm before quoting.

Planning and building control

Two sets of rules matter in England. Planning: a rooflight on a house is normally permitted development if it projects no more than 0.15 m and stays below the highest part of the roof, but flats, listed buildings and Article 4 areas need checking. Building regulations: new openings need approval for the structure and energy performance, and a replacement is a controlled fitting. We are not registered with a competent person scheme, so we notify replacements to building control with a building notice and put the council's fee on the quote.

Questions about rooflight fitting in Hull

Can you fit a rooflight in winter or when it is raining?

Yes, within limits. Cold is less of a problem than wet, because membranes, primers and sealants need a dry surface to bond. We plan fitting days around the forecast and may move a date if heavy rain is due. If the roof has to be opened up, it is not left overnight without a temporary weather seal, so the room below stays dry while the work is finished.

Does a rooflight need building regulations approval?

A new opening usually needs building regulations approval. A replacement is a controlled fitting: it must be self-certified by an installer registered with a competent person scheme or notified to building control. We are not registered with a scheme, so replacements we fit are notified to building control with a building notice, and the council's fee is shown on your quote.

Will my new rooflight leak?

A correctly fitted unit should not. Leaks usually trace back to the detail around the frame: an upstand that is too low, a membrane or flashing that is not dressed properly, sealant applied to a damp surface, or water ponding against the kerb. We fit to the maker's instructions and check each of those points. The fitting carries a written workmanship guarantee, with its terms set out on your quote.

Can you replace an old dome without redoing the whole roof?

Usually, yes. If the existing kerb is sound, level and tall enough, a new unit can often sit on it with a fresh seal to the roof covering. If the kerb is rotten or too low, we rebuild it and patch the covering around it rather than stripping the whole roof. This is checked at the survey and included in the written quote, so you know the full scope first.
