Coverage by arrangement
Oban is covered by arrangement. Tell us the address and we will confirm travel, dates and any ferry or accommodation costs before quoting. Many island and remote jobs can be priced from photos first, so nobody travels until the scope is clear.
Included in the work
- Treated timber frame fixed down to the deck and joists
- Kerb sized from the maker's drawing, internal and external dimensions both checked
- Diagonals measured so the kerb is square before anything sits on it
- Height above the finished roof — We set the upstand so it stands at least 150 mm above the finished roof, measured from the top of any ballast, paving or walkway.
- Roof covering compatibility — We check what the roof is covered in before choosing how the membrane meets the kerb.
A typical installation day
Building an upstand starts with the rooflight's own drawing: its kerb size, height above the finished roof and fall. The team sets the timber out to those figures, checks the diagonals, insulates the outer faces and dresses the membrane up and over. If the rooflight is going on the same day, it is fitted next; if not, the kerb is protected until it does.
Regulations for Oban properties
If you live in Scotland, the key question is whether the job is new or a replacement. A new rooflight needs a building warrant. Swapping an old rooflight for a new one, frame included, doesn't, as long as the new unit meets the standards: the energy figure for new or replacement rooflights in alterations is 1.6 W/m²K. Conservation areas have no householder permitted development rights for roof alterations, and listed buildings need listed building consent.
What to send for a quick quote
Each detail you send takes a question off our list. Photos inside and out show the opening and the ceiling. Rough measurements tell us the unit size. The roof covering tells us how it will be sealed in. Access notes tell us whether a tower or scaffold is needed. A product link, if you have one, lets us check it against the opening. Your postcode, PA34 or nearby, confirms travel.
Common questions in Oban
Can you fit a rooflight in winter or when it is raining?
Yes, within limits. Cold is less of a problem than wet, because membranes, primers and sealants need a dry surface to bond. We plan fitting days around the forecast and may move a date if heavy rain is due. If the roof has to be opened up, it is not left overnight without a temporary weather seal, so the room below stays dry while the work is finished.
Do you cover Oban?
By arrangement. Oban is one of the island or remote locations we take on case by case. Send the address, photos and sizes; we confirm travel, dates and any ferry or accommodation costs in the written quote before you commit.
Do you make good inside after fitting?
Yes, where the quote includes it. Internal finishing usually means lining the reveal with plasterboard, taping or skimming, and fitting trim where it meets the ceiling. Some people prefer their own plasterer or decorator to finish off, which is fine. The written quote spells out exactly where our work stops, so nobody is left guessing about who does what once the unit is in.
