Sun tunnel installation in Huddersfield

Cut the opening. Trim the joists or rafters. Build the upstand or fit the flashing kit. Fix the unit, seal it, finish the inside. On a new opening, that is the whole job in plain terms, and each step has to be right for the next one to work. We carry out this work in Huddersfield and across West Yorkshire, either installing a unit you have bought or sourcing one for you. You get a written quote with the scope set out, and a written workmanship guarantee on the fitting with its terms on that quote.

Is your address covered?

Looking at a property near Huddersfield but not quite in it? We work across HD1, HD2 and HD5 and outwards to Elland, Brighouse and Mirfield. Give us the full postcode when you get in touch, because access, parking and the route for a large unit all depend on the exact street. Those details shape the quote for any job around Huddersfield.

What we check on a supplied unit

Which works out better, buying your own or letting us supply? It depends on what you value. Buying your own gives you control of the product and what you pay for it. Letting us supply puts the whole job, unit and fitting, under one written quote. On a customer-supplied unit we still measure it against the opening, look at the upstand, and inspect the condition it arrived in. Warranty on the product sits with whoever sold it, while the fitting carries our own guarantee.

What we do on the day

  • Dome fixed and sealed on top of the flashing
  • Route through the loft checked for joists, cables and pipes
  • Dust cleared from the room below and the loft
  • Rigid or flexible tube — We check whether a rigid tube will fit the route before falling back on a flexible one.
  • Tube size — We match the tube size to the room and the roof.

From arrival to clean-up

Arrive and agree the plan. Sheet the floor and furniture. Set up the ladder, tower or scaffold. Check the opening, the upstand or flashing, and the unit against the paperwork. Fix and pack a sun tunnel level. Seal it into the roof. Line the reveal or fit the ceiling trim. Clean the glass, clear the waste, and talk you through it. That is the shape of most fitting days, and for this type of job it usually takes half a day to a day.

Do you need permission in Huddersfield?

Two sets of rules matter in England. Planning: a rooflight on a house is normally permitted development if it projects no more than 0.15 m and stays below the highest part of the roof, but flats, listed buildings and Article 4 areas need checking. Building regulations: new openings need approval for the structure and energy performance, and a replacement is a controlled fitting. We are not registered with a competent person scheme, so we notify replacements to building control with a building notice and put the council's fee on the quote.

Getting a price from photos

For fit-only work, the product details matter most: the link, the spec sheet, or a photo of the label on the box. Alongside that, send pictures of the roof and the ceiling below, approximate opening sizes, the type of roof covering, and how someone would get onto the roof. For supply and fit, the same photos and sizes do the job. Finish with your postcode, such as HD1.

Common questions in Huddersfield

How long does fitting take?

Fitting a sun tunnel into an existing, correctly sized opening is often a day's work. New openings take longer, because joists or rafters need trimming, an upstand or flashing has to be built or fitted, and the inside needs finishing. Large units that need lifting gear, and days lost to rain, can stretch things further. Your written quote gives a realistic estimate for your roof.

What is included in the price?

The written quote lists it line by line. Typically that covers fitting labour, fixings, sealants, membrane or flashing materials, any upstand work, internal finishing if agreed, and taking away the waste. For supply and fit, the unit itself is included too. Scaffold, lifting gear and any third-party fees, where needed, are shown separately so you can see what each part of the job costs.

How does payment work?

Payment terms are set out on your written quote before you accept it. Depending on the job, that may mean a deposit, stage payments for larger work, or payment on completion. The contract is with S&K Property Investments and Improvement Ltd, part of the S&K Group. Nothing is added without your agreement: if something unexpected comes up, we discuss it and agree any change before carrying on.
