Sun tunnel installation in Glasgow

Builders and extension firms in Glasgow often want the rooflight stage of a project handled by a specialist fitting team. We step in once the roof deck or battens are ready, fit a sun tunnel on your upstand or ours, detail it into the membrane or tiles, and leave the opening ready for the plasterer. Homeowners get exactly the same service directly. In each case the job is quoted in writing first, with any access or lifting needs spelt out. Jobs around G2 and the neighbouring districts are welcome.

Is your address covered?

Jobs across G2, G4 and G1 are part of our normal cover for Glasgow. We are not an office on the high street. Our fitting teams come out to the property from wherever they are working that week. Neighbouring places such as Rutherglen and Bishopbriggs are covered on the same terms, so a house on the edge of town is no harder to book than one in the centre.

Buying your own, or letting us supply

Which works out better, buying your own or letting us supply? It depends on what you value. Buying your own gives you control of the product and what you pay for it. Letting us supply puts the whole job, unit and fitting, under one written quote. On a customer-supplied unit we still measure it against the opening, look at the upstand, and inspect the condition it arrived in. Warranty on the product sits with whoever sold it, while the fitting carries our own guarantee.

On the day, we cover

  • Rigid or flexible tube run and joined, with as few bends as possible
  • Route through the loft checked for joists, cables and pipes
  • Roof opening cut and the flashing fitted to tiles, slates or a flat-roof kit
  • Tube size — We match the tube size to the room and the roof.
  • Length and bends in the tube — We plan the shortest, straightest route we can between the roof and the ceiling.

From arrival to clean-up

Arrive and agree the plan. Sheet the floor and furniture. Set up the ladder, tower or scaffold. Check the opening, the upstand or flashing, and the unit against the paperwork. Fix and pack a sun tunnel level. Seal it into the roof. Line the reveal or fit the ceiling trim. Clean the glass, clear the waste, and talk you through it. That is the shape of most fitting days, and for this type of job it usually takes half a day to a day.

Do you need permission in Glasgow?

If you live in Scotland, the key question is whether the job is new or a replacement. A new rooflight needs a building warrant. Swapping an old rooflight for a new one, frame included, doesn't, as long as the new unit meets the standards: the energy figure for new or replacement rooflights in alterations is 1.6 W/m²K. Conservation areas have no householder permitted development rights for roof alterations, and listed buildings need listed building consent.

Help us quote accurately

A fast quote needs five things: a photo of the roof from outside, one from the room below, rough sizes of the opening or the space, the roof covering (felt, single-ply, fibreglass, tiles, slate or metal), and a note on access. If you have already bought the unit, add the product link or spec sheet. And give us the postcode, G2 or a neighbouring district.

Common questions in Glasgow

Does a rooflight need a building warrant?

In Scotland a new rooflight needs a building warrant from the council before work starts. Replacing a rooflight complete with its frame doesn't need a warrant, but the new unit must meet the building standards in full, including 1.6 W/m²K. We confirm which applies to your job before you commit.

Do I need planning permission for a rooflight in Glasgow?

Often not. Many rooflights fall under permitted development, provided they do not project beyond the national limit and meet the other conditions that apply in Scotland. Conservation areas, listed buildings and some flats are different and may need consent. Because the rules depend on the property, we confirm what is likely to apply at your address and point you to the planning authority where an application is needed.

Can you fit a rooflight in winter or when it is raining?

Yes, within limits. Cold is less of a problem than wet, because membranes, primers and sealants need a dry surface to bond. We plan fitting days around the forecast and may move a date if heavy rain is due. If the roof has to be opened up, it is not left overnight without a temporary weather seal, so the room below stays dry while the work is finished.
