Sliding rooflight installation in Sandown

Rooflight work is weather work. Membranes, primers and sealants all want a dry surface, so a fitting day in Sandown is planned around the forecast rather than pinned to a date regardless of rain. The opening is kept covered whenever it is exposed, and a roof is not left open overnight without a proper temporary seal. That approach applies to every sliding rooflight we install, from a new opening to a straight swap or a fit-only job. We cover Sandown, the PO36 district and the rest of Isle of Wight.

Where our fitters travel

Looking at a property near Sandown but not quite in it? We work across PO36, PO37 and PO35 and outwards to Ryde, Newport and Cowes. Give us the full postcode when you get in touch, because access, parking and the route for a large unit all depend on the exact street. Those details shape the quote for any job around Sandown.

Already bought your unit?

If you have bought a sliding rooflight yourself, we check four things before fitting. First, the delivery: open it, look for chips, cracks and bent frames, and report any damage to the seller straight away. Second, the size, measured against the builder's opening rather than the external frame. Third, the upstand height above the finished roof. Fourth, the maker's instructions, which set the fixings and sealing. Product warranty claims go to the seller and maker; our guarantee is for how it was fitted.

Included in the work

  • Clear run confirmed for the glass to slide over when open
  • Controls, sensors and any safety stop set up and tested
  • Upstand checked for strength, square and level along its full length
  • Guarding on the terrace — We look at how the roof terrace will be guarded before the rooflight is fitted.
  • Power and safety stops — We confirm the power supply and the safety features before fitting day.

How a fitting day runs

Where a job takes one to two days, the split is usually structural work first and finishing second. Early on, the fitters cut or prepare the opening, trim where needed and prepare the upstand or flashing. Then a sliding rooflight is lifted in, fixed and made weathertight so the roof is sound before anyone moves inside. Plasterboard, trim and filler for the reveal come after. Each evening the work area is swept, and at the end the glass is cleaned and the team talks you through what was done.

Planning, building control and Sandown

Two sets of rules matter in England. Planning: a rooflight on a house is normally permitted development if it projects no more than 0.15 m and stays below the highest part of the roof, but flats, listed buildings and Article 4 areas need checking. Building regulations: new openings need approval for the structure and energy performance, and a replacement is a controlled fitting. We are not registered with a competent person scheme, so we notify replacements to building control with a building notice and put the council's fee on the quote.

Getting a price from photos

Each detail you send takes a question off our list. Photos inside and out show the opening and the ceiling. Rough measurements tell us the unit size. The roof covering tells us how it will be sealed in. Access notes tell us whether a tower or scaffold is needed. A product link, if you have one, lets us check it against the opening. Your postcode, PO36 or nearby, confirms travel.

Common questions in Sandown

Does a rooflight need building regulations approval?

A new opening usually needs building regulations approval. A replacement is a controlled fitting: it must be self-certified by an installer registered with a competent person scheme or notified to building control. We are not registered with a scheme, so replacements we fit are notified to building control with a building notice, and the council's fee is shown on your quote.

Can you remove and dispose of the old rooflight?

Yes. Taking out the old unit is part of any replacement job, and it leaves with the rest of the waste unless you ask to keep it. Old domes, glass and frames go through proper waste routes. If removal turns up a rotten kerb or damaged decking, we show you what we have found and agree the repair with you before going any further.

Do you offer trade rates for builders and roofers?

We carry out subcontract fitting for builders, roofers, extension companies and commercial contractors. Pricing is per job or per schedule of units, agreed in writing before we start. We can work to your programme, fit on your upstand or build our own, and leave the opening ready for the next trade. Send drawings or a unit schedule and we will come back with a trade quote.

Send a few photos and your PO36 postcode, and we will put together a written quote for the job.
