Rooflight glass replacement in Dorset

We cover 37 postcode districts across Dorset, and we fit rooflight glass units in all of them. The work itself does not change from one district to the next. A rooflight glass unit still needs a correctly sized opening, an upstand or flashing to suit the roof, and sealing that matches the covering. What does change is access: terraced streets, long gardens, steep pitches, tight parking. We price that honestly in the written quote rather than averaging it out across every job.

Towns we list in Dorset

From the larger towns to the smaller places in between, we take on rooflight fitting across Dorset. The process is the same for a terrace, a farmhouse extension or an industrial unit: details first, written quote second, fitting day third. Remote and island addresses in England, where they arise, are covered by arrangement, and we tell you that before quoting.

What we do on the day

  • Old glass taken out safely and removed from site
  • New unit set on packers, then beaded, capped or bonded as designed
  • Joints water tested and the glass cleaned inside and out
  • Can the glass come out? — We check whether your rooflight has removable glass or a bonded unit before booking a fitting visit.
  • Condition of the frame — We look at the frame closely before committing to new glass.

Rules that apply in England

Two sets of rules matter in England. Planning: a rooflight on a house is normally permitted development if it projects no more than 0.15 m and stays below the highest part of the roof, but flats, listed buildings and Article 4 areas need checking. Building regulations: new openings need approval for the structure and energy performance, and a replacement is a controlled fitting. We are not registered with a competent person scheme, so we notify replacements to building control with a building notice and put the council's fee on the quote.

Common questions in Dorset

Is new glass or a new rooflight better value?

If the frame, gaskets and drainage are sound, new glass is usually the cheaper fix. If the frame is cracked, distorted or leaking at the kerb, a full replacement is better value. After the measuring visit we price both so you can compare.

Can you replace just the glass in my rooflight?

Often, yes. If the frame, gaskets and drainage are sound, a new sealed unit can go into the existing frame. If the frame has failed, is distorted or leaks around the edge, replacing the whole rooflight is usually the better answer, and we tell you that.

Can I upgrade the glass while it is being replaced?

Usually. Solar-control, self-cleaning, toughened or laminated glass can be specified as long as the frame can take the thickness and weight. We check that on the measuring visit and price the options side by side.
