Loft conversion roof windows in Putney

Loft conversion roof windows in Putney comes down to what happens around the glass. A good unit sat on a poor upstand, or with the membrane or flashing cut short at the corners, will still let water in. We fit each loft roof window to the maker's instructions for fixings, packers and sealant, for homes and businesses across Putney and the rest of Greater London. That covers supply and fit, fit-only for a unit you already own, and swapping out a tired one. Every job starts with a written quote, so the price and scope are clear before anyone climbs a ladder.

Coverage in and around Putney

If you also own a property or a business unit in Wandsworth, Roehampton or Barnes, that is no problem. We can survey and quote both, and where it suits, line the fitting days up together. Every address is reached by fitters travelling to it from their current jobs, and SW15, SW6 and SW18 sit comfortably within that pattern.

Already bought your unit?

Your unit or ours, the fitting standard is the same. For supply and fit we choose a loft roof window to suit the roof and price it with the installation. For fit-only we work with what you have, after confirming it arrived undamaged, that it matches the builder's opening, and that the upstand will sit at the height the maker asks for. Report any transit damage to the seller, as the product cover is theirs and the maker's. Our written guarantee applies to the fitting itself.

Included in the work

  • Rafters trimmed and doubled where the openings need them
  • Tiles or slates cut and refitted, with the roof left weathertight
  • Window positions set out on the slope to line up inside and out
  • Balcony-style windows — We check the rafters and the roof pitch before recommending balcony-style windows.
  • Combination flashings — We order combination flashings where windows sit close together.

What happens on the day

On the day, you need to be in at the start and at the end. In between, the fitters get on with it. They will want the room below cleared where possible, a parking spot if you have one, and somewhere to set the unit down safely. After checking the opening and the upstand or flashing, they fix a loft roof window, seal it and finish the inside. Packaging and any old unit leave with them unless the quote says otherwise.

Planning, building control and Putney

Two sets of rules matter in England. Planning: a rooflight on a house is normally permitted development if it projects no more than 0.15 m and stays below the highest part of the roof, but flats, listed buildings and Article 4 areas need checking. Building regulations: new openings need approval for the structure and energy performance, and a replacement is a controlled fitting. We are not registered with a competent person scheme, so we notify replacements to building control with a building notice and put the council's fee on the quote.

Getting a price from photos

Keep it simple. Two or three photos, outside and inside. Approximate sizes. What the roof is made of. Anything awkward about getting up there, such as a conservatory below, a narrow side path or no parking. If you bought the rooflight online, the link or model name. Then your postcode in or around SW15. That is enough for a first price.

Common questions in Putney

Can you remove and dispose of the old rooflight?

Yes. Taking out the old unit is part of any replacement job, and it leaves with the rest of the waste unless you ask to keep it. Old domes, glass and frames go through proper waste routes. If removal turns up a rotten kerb or damaged decking, we show you what we have found and agree the repair with you before going any further.

What if my roof opening is the wrong size for the loft roof window?

We find out before the fitting day, not on it. If the opening is slightly out, it can usually be adjusted by trimming or by packing out the upstand. If it is a long way off, the choice is between altering the opening and changing the unit. Bear in mind that rooflights are often sold by builder's opening size rather than external size, so check which one your measurement refers to.

Can you fit a rooflight in winter or when it is raining?

Yes, within limits. Cold is less of a problem than wet, because membranes, primers and sealants need a dry surface to bond. We plan fitting days around the forecast and may move a date if heavy rain is due. If the roof has to be opened up, it is not left overnight without a temporary weather seal, so the room below stays dry while the work is finished.
