Frameless rooflight installation in Peterborough

Rooflight work is weather work. Membranes, primers and sealants all want a dry surface, so a fitting day in Peterborough is planned around the forecast rather than pinned to a date regardless of rain. The opening is kept covered whenever it is exposed, and a roof is not left open overnight without a proper temporary seal. That approach applies to every frameless rooflight we install, from a new opening to a straight swap or a fit-only job. We cover Peterborough, the PE1 district and the rest of Cambridgeshire.

Coverage in and around Peterborough

Distance is rarely the deciding factor. A roof in Stamford, 11 miles from Peterborough, gets the same survey, the same written quote and the same fitting process as one in PE1, PE2 and PE3. What changes the price is the job itself: size of unit, roof type, access and lifting. March, around 14 miles out, is treated the same way.

What we check on a supplied unit

Your unit or ours, the fitting standard is the same. For supply and fit we choose a frameless rooflight to suit the roof and price it with the installation. For fit-only we work with what you have, after confirming it arrived undamaged, that it matches the builder's opening, and that the upstand will sit at the height the maker asks for. Report any transit damage to the seller, as the product cover is theirs and the maker's. Our written guarantee applies to the fitting itself.

What we do on the day

  • Upstand built to the maker's drawing within its stated tolerance
  • Fall set in the upstand so rain clears the oversailing glass edge
  • Inside reveal formed so plaster or trim meets the glass cleanly
  • Drainage at the overhang — We check how water leaves the glass where it oversails the kerb.
  • Laminated inner pane — We confirm the inner pane is laminated or otherwise suited to being overhead.

How a fitting day runs

Protection comes before tools. Floors, furniture and stairs get covered, and the ceiling below the opening is sheeted to catch dust. Up top, the fitters confirm the opening is square and the upstand or flashing suits what the maker specifies. Fixing follows, then weather-sealing into the membrane, felt or tiles. Only once the roof is tight do they turn to the internal reveal. Time on site for a frameless rooflight: one day, weather permitting.

Do you need permission in Peterborough?

In England, a new rooflight opening generally needs building regulations approval because the roof structure is altered and the glazing must meet energy rules: 2.2 W/m²K for a rooflight in an existing home, or 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B) for a roof window. Planning is often not needed on a house: permitted development covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof slope and sit below the highest part of the roof. Flats, listed buildings and areas with an Article 4 direction are different, so we check your address first.

Help us quote accurately

Keep it simple. Two or three photos, outside and inside. Approximate sizes. What the roof is made of. Anything awkward about getting up there, such as a conservatory below, a narrow side path or no parking. If you bought the rooflight online, the link or model name. Then your postcode in or around PE1. That is enough for a first price.

Common questions in Peterborough

Can you fit the frameless rooflight I bought online?

Yes, fit-only is one of our core services. Send the product link or spec, photos of the roof and rough sizes, and we can usually price it from those. Before fitting we check the delivery for damage, which should be reported to the seller, plus the size against the builder's opening and the upstand height. The product warranty stays with the maker or seller, and our guarantee covers the fitting.

Does a rooflight need building regulations approval?

A new opening usually needs building regulations approval. A replacement is a controlled fitting: it must be self-certified by an installer registered with a competent person scheme or notified to building control. We are not registered with a scheme, so replacements we fit are notified to building control with a building notice, and the council's fee is shown on your quote.

How long does fitting take?

Fitting a frameless rooflight into an existing, correctly sized opening is often a day's work. New openings take longer, because joists or rafters need trimming, an upstand or flashing has to be built or fitted, and the inside needs finishing. Large units that need lifting gear, and days lost to rain, can stretch things further. Your written quote gives a realistic estimate for your roof.
