Rooflight upstands & kerbs in Peterborough

A kerb that is a few millimetres out of square, or a little too low once the roof covering goes on, can stop a rooflight sealing properly. That is why upstand work in Peterborough starts with measuring the opening, the roof build-up and the unit's kerb size together. The upstand is then built from treated timber, insulated and weathered into the membrane, felt or fibreglass. You get a written quote first and a note of the sizes it was built to.

Where our fitters travel

Looking at a property near Peterborough but not quite in it? We work across PE1, PE2 and PE3 and outwards to Stamford, March and Spalding. Give us the full postcode when you get in touch, because access, parking and the route for a large unit all depend on the exact street. Those details shape the quote for any job around Peterborough.

What the job includes

  • Roof membrane turned up, bonded and finished at the kerb top
  • Insulation fitted to the upstand faces to limit heat loss
  • Kerb sized from the maker's drawing, internal and external dimensions both checked
  • Size tolerance on the kerb — We build kerbs to a tight tolerance because rooflight glass is made to order and cannot be trimmed on site.
  • Fall built in or level — We confirm whether your rooflight needs the kerb to provide a fall or should sit level.

Fitting your rooflight upstand, step by step

Building an upstand starts with the rooflight's own drawing: its kerb size, height above the finished roof and fall. The team sets the timber out to those figures, checks the diagonals, insulates the outer faces and dresses the membrane up and over. If the rooflight is going on the same day, it is fitted next; if not, the kerb is protected until it does.

Planning, building control and Peterborough

Two sets of rules matter in England. Planning: a rooflight on a house is normally permitted development if it projects no more than 0.15 m and stays below the highest part of the roof, but flats, listed buildings and Article 4 areas need checking. Building regulations: new openings need approval for the structure and energy performance, and a replacement is a controlled fitting. We are not registered with a competent person scheme, so we notify replacements to building control with a building notice and put the council's fee on the quote.

Details that speed up your quote

Each detail you send takes a question off our list. Photos inside and out show the opening and the ceiling. Rough measurements tell us the unit size. The roof covering tells us how it will be sealed in. Access notes tell us whether a tower or scaffold is needed. A product link, if you have one, lets us check it against the opening. Your postcode, PE1 or nearby, confirms travel.

Common questions in Peterborough

What is included in the price?

The written quote lists it line by line. Typically that covers fitting labour, fixings, sealants, membrane or flashing materials, any upstand work, internal finishing if agreed, and taking away the waste. For supply and fit, the unit itself is included too. Scaffold, lifting gear and any third-party fees, where needed, are shown separately so you can see what each part of the job costs.

Do you cover Peterborough?

Yes. Fitters travel to addresses in Peterborough and the surrounding districts, including PE1. We do not run an office there; the survey and the fitting happen at your property. A few island and remote postcodes are covered by arrangement; if yours is one, we confirm travel and dates before quoting.

Can you remove and dispose of the old rooflight?

Yes. Taking out the old unit is part of any replacement job, and it leaves with the rest of the waste unless you ask to keep it. Old domes, glass and frames go through proper waste routes. If removal turns up a rotten kerb or damaged decking, we show you what we have found and agree the repair with you before going any further.

Tell us your postcode, PE1 or close by, and what you want fitted. We will reply with the next steps and a quote.
