Electric opening rooflight installation in Tonypandy

Rooflight work is weather work. Membranes, primers and sealants all want a dry surface, so a fitting day in Tonypandy is planned around the forecast rather than pinned to a date regardless of rain. The opening is kept covered whenever it is exposed, and a roof is not left open overnight without a proper temporary seal. That approach applies to every electric opening rooflight we install, from a new opening to a straight swap or a fit-only job. We cover Tonypandy, the CF40 district and the rest of Mid Glamorgan.

Guide ranges for supply & fit; the electrician's final connection is quoted separately. Your price is fixed in a written quote after we have seen photos or surveyed. Scaffold, access towers or a crane are priced separately if the job needs them, and building control fees, where a job needs them, are shown as their own line.

Covering CF40 and neighbouring districts

Distance is rarely the deciding factor. A roof in Rhondda, 3 miles from Tonypandy, gets the same survey, the same written quote and the same fitting process as one in CF40, CF39 and CF41. What changes the price is the job itself: size of unit, roof type, access and lifting. Pontypridd, around 5 miles out, is treated the same way.

Your electric opening rooflights or ours

A damaged delivery is a frequent snag on fit-only work. Before the day, unpack an electric opening rooflight, photograph it, and tell the seller about any cracks or scuffs, because claims are much easier made early. We will also ask for the model or a link, so we can read the maker's instructions and check the builder's opening size and the upstand height it expects. If everything lines up, we fit it. If not, we explain what needs changing first.

What the job includes

  • Unit fitted, sealed and weathered like a fixed flat rooflight
  • Cable route and controls set up ready for the electrician's final connection, quoted as a separate line
  • Opening and closing tested, with controls explained at handover
  • Cable length and size — We check the cable run against the maker's limits before planning where the controls go.
  • Where power comes from — We find a sensible power supply for the rooflight before fitting day.

How a fitting day runs

On the day, you need to be in at the start and at the end. In between, the fitters get on with it. They will want the room below cleared where possible, a parking spot if you have one, and somewhere to set the unit down safely. After checking the opening and the upstand or flashing, they fix an electric opening rooflight, seal it and finish the inside. Packaging and any old unit leave with them unless the quote says otherwise.

Regulations for Tonypandy properties

Welsh rules differ from England's in one important way: rooflights lose permitted development rights in conservation areas, National Parks, AONBs and World Heritage Sites. Elsewhere on a house, a rooflight that projects no more than 150 mm and stays below the highest part of the roof is usually fine. Building regulations still apply to new openings, replacements we fit go through a building notice because we are not scheme-registered, and the energy limit for rooflights is 2.2 W/m²K. A new Welsh Approved Document L takes effect on 4 March 2027.

Getting a price from photos

Keep it simple. Two or three photos, outside and inside. Approximate sizes. What the roof is made of. Anything awkward about getting up there, such as a conservatory below, a narrow side path or no parking. If you bought the rooflight online, the link or model name. Then your postcode in or around CF40. That is enough for a first price.

Common questions in Tonypandy

What upstand height and roof pitch does electric opening rooflight fitting need?

It depends on the product. Manufacturers usually specify a minimum upstand height above the finished roof surface, and a minimum pitch on the glass so rain runs off. We follow the maker's figures for your unit rather than a rule of thumb. If your existing kerb or roof falls short, we explain the options, such as raising the upstand or choosing a unit with built-in pitch.

Can you fit a rooflight in winter or when it is raining?

Yes, within limits. Cold is less of a problem than wet, because membranes, primers and sealants need a dry surface to bond. We plan fitting days around the forecast and may move a date if heavy rain is due. If the roof has to be opened up, it is not left overnight without a temporary weather seal, so the room below stays dry while the work is finished.

Does a rooflight need building regulations approval?

In Wales a new opening generally needs building regulations approval. A replacement must be self-certified by a scheme-registered installer or covered by a building notice. We are not registered with a scheme, so replacements we fit go through a building notice, and the council's fee is shown on your quote.

Tell us your postcode, CF40 or close by, and what you want fitted. We will reply with the next steps and a quote.
