Conservation rooflight installation in Stowmarket

Builders and extension firms in Stowmarket often want the rooflight stage of a project handled by a specialist fitting team. We step in once the roof deck or battens are ready, fit a conservation rooflight on your upstand or ours, detail it into the membrane or tiles, and leave the opening ready for the plasterer. Homeowners get exactly the same service directly. In each case the job is quoted in writing first, with any access or lifting needs spelt out. Jobs around IP14 and the neighbouring districts are welcome.

Fitting across Stowmarket and nearby

If you also own a property or a business unit in Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds or Sudbury, that is no problem. We can survey and quote both, and where it suits, line the fitting days up together. Every address is reached by fitters travelling to it from their current jobs, and IP14, IP6 and IP30 sit comfortably within that pattern.

Fit-only or supply and fit

There are two ways to do this. Supply and fit means we source a conservation rooflight that suits your roof and install it, so one company answers for both the product choice and the fitting. Fit-only means you buy the unit and we install it. With fit-only, the product warranty stays with the maker or seller, and our written guarantee covers the fitting work. Both routes get the same checks on the opening, the upstand and the maker's instructions before anything is fixed.

Included in the work

  • Slates or tiles made good around the frame with tidy cuts
  • Rafters trimmed with timbers that suit the existing roof
  • Slates or tiles lifted carefully and kept for reuse where possible
  • Reusing the original covering — We plan to reuse the existing slates or tiles wherever we can.
  • Energy and old roofs — We make sure the rooflight meets current energy rules while suiting an older roof build-up.

A typical installation day

Where a job takes one day, the split is usually structural work first and finishing second. Early on, the fitters cut or prepare the opening, trim where needed and prepare the upstand or flashing. Then a conservation rooflight is lifted in, fixed and made weathertight so the roof is sound before anyone moves inside. Plasterboard, trim and filler for the reveal come after. Each evening the work area is swept, and at the end the glass is cleaned and the team talks you through what was done.

Do you need permission in Stowmarket?

England's rules in short: permitted development usually covers a rooflight on a house roof provided it doesn't stick out more than 0.15 m or rise above the ridge, though a listed building always needs consent and some streets have Article 4 directions. Building regulations apply to new openings, and replacements go through building control; as we are not registered with a competent person scheme, we use a building notice and show the fee on the quote. The energy limit for rooflights in existing homes is 2.2 W/m²K, and the 2026 Approved Document L, in force from 24 March 2027, keeps that figure.

Getting a price from photos

Start with your phone. Take a picture of the roof where the unit goes or already sits, then one from inside looking up. Measure what you can, even roughly. Tell us what the roof is covered with and how a fitter would reach it: ladder, garden access or scaffold. Bought it already? Send the link or spec. Add your full postcode, for example in IP14, and we can price it.

Common questions in Stowmarket

How long does fitting take?

Fitting a conservation rooflight into an existing, correctly sized opening is often a day's work. New openings take longer, because joists or rafters need trimming, an upstand or flashing has to be built or fitted, and the inside needs finishing. Large units that need lifting gear, and days lost to rain, can stretch things further. Your written quote gives a realistic estimate for your roof.

What if my roof opening is the wrong size for the conservation rooflight?

We find out before the fitting day, not on it. If the opening is slightly out, it can usually be adjusted by trimming or by packing out the upstand. If it is a long way off, the choice is between altering the opening and changing the unit. Bear in mind that rooflights are often sold by builder's opening size rather than external size, so check which one your measurement refers to.

Can you fit the conservation rooflight I bought online?

Yes, fit-only is one of our core services. Send the product link or spec, photos of the roof and rough sizes, and we can usually price it from those. Before fitting we check the delivery for damage, which should be reported to the seller, plus the size against the opening, the flashing kit and the roof pitch. The product warranty stays with the maker or seller, and our guarantee covers the fitting.

Send a few photos and your IP14 postcode, and we will put together a written quote for the job.
