Conservation rooflight installation in Isle of Wight

A good share of conservation rooflight installation in Isle of Wight is replacement work. Older units go brittle or discoloured, sealed glass mists, and seals give up after years of sun and frost. Swapping the unit is often possible on the existing kerb, provided that kerb is sound, level and tall enough above the finished roof. Where it is not, we rebuild it. We cover the whole of Isle of Wight, across 12 postcode districts, with fitters travelling to each address.

Towns we list in Isle of Wight

From the larger towns to the smaller places in between, we take on rooflight fitting across Isle of Wight. The process is the same for a terrace, a farmhouse extension or an industrial unit: details first, written quote second, fitting day third. Remote and island addresses in England, where they arise, are covered by arrangement, and we tell you that before quoting.

Included in the work

  • Rafters trimmed with timbers that suit the existing roof
  • Position checked against any consent drawings or council conditions
  • Rooflight set low so it sits close to the line of the roof
  • Glazing bar and frame detail — We check whether the council has asked for particular details, such as a central glazing bar or a dark frame colour.
  • Energy and old roofs — We make sure the rooflight meets current energy rules while suiting an older roof build-up.

Rules that apply in England

Replacing a rooflight in an English home is a controlled fitting: it has to be self-certified by a scheme-registered installer or notified to building control. We are not registered with a competent person scheme, so replacements we fit are notified with a building notice, and the new unit has to meet current energy limits. Adding a new one usually means a building regulations application, because joists or rafters are trimmed. On the planning side, most house rooflights are permitted development if they project 0.15 m or less; on a side slope the glass must be obscured and fixed unless the opening part is over 1.7 m above the floor.

Common questions in Isle of Wight

What is included in the price?

The written quote lists it line by line. Typically that covers fitting labour, fixings, sealants, membrane or flashing materials, any upstand work, internal finishing if agreed, and taking away the waste. For supply and fit, the unit itself is included too. Scaffold, lifting gear and any third-party fees, where needed, are shown separately so you can see what each part of the job costs.

Do I need planning permission for a rooflight in Isle of Wight?

Often not. Many rooflights fall under permitted development, provided they do not project beyond the national limit and meet the other conditions that apply in England. Conservation areas, listed buildings and some flats are different and may need consent. Because the rules depend on the property, we confirm what is likely to apply at your address and point you to the planning authority where an application is needed.

What if my roof opening is the wrong size for the conservation rooflight?

We find out before the fitting day, not on it. If the opening is slightly out, it can usually be adjusted by trimming or by packing out the upstand. If it is a long way off, the choice is between altering the opening and changing the unit. Bear in mind that rooflights are often sold by builder's opening size rather than external size, so check which one your measurement refers to.
