Conservation rooflight installation in Newport

Rooflight work is weather work. Membranes, primers and sealants all want a dry surface, so a fitting day in Newport is planned around the forecast rather than pinned to a date regardless of rain. The opening is kept covered whenever it is exposed, and a roof is not left open overnight without a proper temporary seal. That approach applies to every conservation rooflight we install, from a new opening to a straight swap or a fit-only job. We cover Newport, the NP20 district and the rest of Gwent.

Guide ranges for supply & fit. Your price is fixed in a written quote after we have seen photos or surveyed. Scaffold, access towers or a crane are priced separately if the job needs them, and building control fees, where a job needs them, are shown as their own line.

Is your address covered?

If you also own a property or a business unit in Risca, Cwmbran or Pontypool, that is no problem. We can survey and quote both, and where it suits, line the fitting days up together. Every address is reached by fitters travelling to it from their current jobs, and NP20, NP19 and NP10 sit comfortably within that pattern.

Buying your own, or letting us supply

Which works out better, buying your own or letting us supply? It depends on what you value. Buying your own gives you control of the product and what you pay for it. Letting us supply puts the whole job, unit and fitting, under one written quote. On a customer-supplied unit we still measure it against the opening, look at the upstand, and inspect the condition it arrived in. Warranty on the product sits with whoever sold it, while the fitting carries our own guarantee.

What the job includes

  • Inside lining fitted to suit the room's ceiling or exposed rafters
  • Flashings in lead or a matching kit, dressed to the covering
  • Rafters trimmed with timbers that suit the existing roof
  • Reusing the original covering — We plan to reuse the existing slates or tiles wherever we can.
  • Glazing bar and frame detail — We check whether the council has asked for particular details, such as a central glazing bar or a dark frame colour.

How a fitting day runs

Arrive and agree the plan. Sheet the floor and furniture. Set up the ladder, tower or scaffold. Check the opening, the upstand or flashing, and the unit against the paperwork. Fix and pack a conservation rooflight level. Seal it into the roof. Line the reveal or fit the ceiling trim. Clean the glass, clear the waste, and talk you through it. That is the shape of most fitting days, and for this type of job it usually takes one day.

Regulations for Newport properties

Welsh rules differ from England's in one important way: rooflights lose permitted development rights in conservation areas, National Parks, AONBs and World Heritage Sites. Elsewhere on a house, a rooflight that projects no more than 150 mm and stays below the highest part of the roof is usually fine. Building regulations still apply to new openings, replacements we fit go through a building notice because we are not scheme-registered, and the energy limit for rooflights is 2.2 W/m²K. A new Welsh Approved Document L takes effect on 4 March 2027.

Before you get in touch

Start with your phone. Take a picture of the roof where the unit goes or already sits, then one from inside looking up. Measure what you can, even roughly. Tell us what the roof is covered with and how a fitter would reach it: ladder, garden access or scaffold. Bought it already? Send the link or spec. Add your full postcode, for example in NP20, and we can price it.

Common questions in Newport

What if my roof opening is the wrong size for the conservation rooflight?

We find out before the fitting day, not on it. If the opening is slightly out, it can usually be adjusted by trimming or by packing out the upstand. If it is a long way off, the choice is between altering the opening and changing the unit. Bear in mind that rooflights are often sold by builder's opening size rather than external size, so check which one your measurement refers to.

Do you make good inside after fitting?

Yes, where the quote includes it. Internal finishing usually means lining the reveal with plasterboard, taping or skimming, and fitting trim where it meets the ceiling. Some people prefer their own plasterer or decorator to finish off, which is fine. The written quote spells out exactly where our work stops, so nobody is left guessing about who does what once the unit is in.

Will my new conservation rooflight leak?

A correctly fitted unit should not. Leaks usually trace back to the detail around the frame: an upstand that is too low, a membrane or flashing that is not dressed properly, sealant applied to a damp surface, or water ponding against the kerb. We fit to the maker's instructions and check each of those points. The fitting carries a written workmanship guarantee, with its terms set out on your quote.
