Conservation rooflight installation in Hull

Glass is heavy, and bigger units get heavy fast. Fitting a conservation rooflight in Hull means planning how it travels from the delivery vehicle to the roof without chipping an edge or straining a back. Smaller units go up by hand with two fitters. Larger ones may need a hoist, a scaffold loading bay or a crane, and we tell you at quote stage if that applies. Once it is up, the fitting follows the maker's sequence: seat, fix, seal, finish. We take on work like this across East Riding of Yorkshire.

Where our fitters travel

Distance is rarely the deciding factor. A roof in Beverley, 8 miles from Hull, gets the same survey, the same written quote and the same fitting process as one in HU1, HU2 and HU3. What changes the price is the job itself: size of unit, roof type, access and lifting. Brough, around 10 miles out, is treated the same way.

Your conservation rooflights or ours

If you have bought a conservation rooflight yourself, we check four things before fitting. First, the delivery: open it, look for chips, cracks and bent frames, and report any damage to the seller straight away. Second, the size, measured against the builder's opening rather than the external frame. Third, the flashing kit and the roof pitch range. Fourth, the maker's instructions, which set the fixings and sealing. Product warranty claims go to the seller and maker; our guarantee is for how it was fitted.

On the day, we cover

  • Flashings in lead or a matching kit, dressed to the covering
  • Position checked against any consent drawings or council conditions
  • Rooflight set low so it sits close to the line of the roof
  • Glazing bar and frame detail — We check whether the council has asked for particular details, such as a central glazing bar or a dark frame colour.
  • Reusing the original covering — We plan to reuse the existing slates or tiles wherever we can.

What happens on the day

Morning first: the team arrives, introduces itself and walks through the job with you. Dust sheets go down in the room below and along the route in. Then the opening and upstand, or the flashing on a pitched roof, are checked against the unit's measurements. A conservation rooflight goes in, is fixed to the maker's pattern and sealed into the roof covering. Inside, the reveal is finished as quoted. Before leaving, the team clears debris and talks you through what was done. Most jobs of this type take one day.

Planning and building rules in England

England's rules in short: permitted development usually covers a rooflight on a house roof provided it doesn't stick out more than 0.15 m or rise above the ridge, though a listed building always needs consent and some streets have Article 4 directions. Building regulations apply to new openings, and replacements go through building control; as we are not registered with a competent person scheme, we use a building notice and show the fee on the quote. The energy limit for rooflights in existing homes is 2.2 W/m²K, and the 2026 Approved Document L, in force from 24 March 2027, keeps that figure.

Help us quote accurately

Start with your phone. Take a picture of the roof where the unit goes or already sits, then one from inside looking up. Measure what you can, even roughly. Tell us what the roof is covered with and how a fitter would reach it: ladder, garden access or scaffold. Bought it already? Send the link or spec. Add your full postcode, for example in HU1, and we can price it.

Common questions in Hull

Do you cover Hull?

Yes. Fitters travel to addresses in Hull and the surrounding districts, including HU1. We do not run an office there; the survey and the fitting happen at your property. A few island and remote postcodes are covered by arrangement; if yours is one, we confirm travel and dates before quoting.

Will my new conservation rooflight leak?

A correctly fitted unit should not. Leaks usually trace back to the detail around the frame: an upstand that is too low, a membrane or flashing that is not dressed properly, sealant applied to a damp surface, or water ponding against the kerb. We fit to the maker's instructions and check each of those points. The fitting carries a written workmanship guarantee, with its terms set out on your quote.

Do you offer trade rates for builders and roofers?

We carry out subcontract fitting for builders, roofers, extension companies and commercial contractors. Pricing is per job or per schedule of units, agreed in writing before we start. We can work to your programme, fit on your upstand or build our own, and leave the opening ready for the next trade. Send drawings or a unit schedule and we will come back with a trade quote.

Get in touch with the details of your Hull property and we will explain what the job involves and what it costs.
