Specialist fitting or a general builder
Large glass units are heavy, awkward and expensive to replace if dropped. Getting one onto a roof may need a hoist, a crane or a planned lift from a scaffold. Fitting it means setting it level on packers, without twisting the frame, while the weather holds. A general builder may do this a few times a year. A rooflight fitting team plans the lift, the equipment and the sequence before the day. That lowers the risk to the unit and to the people lifting it.
Postcodes and places we cover
Our fitters cover all of Manchester, including M2, M1 and M4, and travel on to Longsight, Salford and Old Trafford on the same basis. Nobody needs to visit us, because we come to the property for surveys and fitting. Dates are offered according to fitter availability, and travel is part of the written quote rather than an extra.
Do you need permission in Manchester?
In England, a new rooflight opening generally needs building regulations approval because the roof structure is altered and the glazing must meet energy rules: 2.2 W/m²K for a rooflight in an existing home, or 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B) for a roof window. Planning is often not needed on a house: permitted development covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof slope and sit below the highest part of the roof. Flats, listed buildings and areas with an Article 4 direction are different, so we check your address first.
Questions about rooflight fitting in Manchester
What if my roof opening is the wrong size for the rooflight?
We find out before the fitting day, not on it. If the opening is slightly out, it can usually be adjusted by trimming or by packing out the upstand. If it is a long way off, the choice is between altering the opening and changing the unit. Bear in mind that rooflights are often sold by builder's opening size rather than external size, so check which one your measurement refers to.
Can you fit a rooflight in winter or when it is raining?
Yes, within limits. Cold is less of a problem than wet, because membranes, primers and sealants need a dry surface to bond. We plan fitting days around the forecast and may move a date if heavy rain is due. If the roof has to be opened up, it is not left overnight without a temporary weather seal, so the room below stays dry while the work is finished.
Do you cover Manchester?
Yes. Fitters travel to addresses in Manchester and the surrounding districts, including M2. We do not run an office there; the survey and the fitting happen at your property. A few island and remote postcodes are covered by arrangement; if yours is one, we confirm travel and dates before quoting.
Do you need scaffolding to fit a rooflight?
Not always. Single-storey roofs can often be reached safely with ladders, a tower or edge protection. Higher roofs, steep pitches and large units usually need scaffold or a mobile platform, and heavy glass may need a crane. We assess access from your photos or at the survey, and any scaffold or lifting cost is shown as its own line on the written quote.
