Walk-on rooflight installation in Wimbledon

Plenty of rooflight trouble starts with a tape measure. Units are often sold by the builder's opening, meaning the hole in the roof, rather than the overall external size, and confusing the two leaves you with a frame that does not suit the opening. Before we fit any walk-on rooflight in Wimbledon, we measure the opening, the upstand or kerb where there is one, and the finished roof level, then compare them with the maker's drawing. If something is out, you hear about it before the fitting day rather than on it. That single check keeps most jobs like this on track.

Coverage in and around Wimbledon

If you also own a property or a business unit in Wimbledon Park, Morden or Earlsfield, that is no problem. We can survey and quote both, and where it suits, line the fitting days up together. Every address is reached by fitters travelling to it from their current jobs, and SW19, SW20 and SW17 sit comfortably within that pattern.

What we check on a supplied unit

Your unit or ours, the fitting standard is the same. For supply and fit we choose a walk-on rooflight to suit the roof and price it with the installation. For fit-only we work with what you have, after confirming it arrived undamaged, that it matches the builder's opening, and that the upstand will sit at the height the maker asks for. Report any transit damage to the seller, as the product cover is theirs and the maker's. Our written guarantee applies to the fitting itself.

What we do on the day

  • Unit bedded and fixed so it sits level with the finished surface
  • Protective film removed and the anti-slip surface left clean
  • Support frame or upstand prepared to the approved structural design
  • Non-fragile is not walk-on — We make sure the unit is genuinely designed for foot traffic.
  • Structural calculations — We need structural calculations for the glass and its support before a walk-on job goes ahead.

Fitting your walk-on rooflight, step by step

Arrive and agree the plan. Sheet the floor and furniture. Set up the ladder, tower or scaffold. Check the opening, the upstand or flashing, and the unit against the paperwork. Fix and pack a walk-on rooflight level. Seal it into the roof. Line the reveal or fit the ceiling trim. Clean the glass, clear the waste, and talk you through it. That is the shape of most fitting days, and for this type of job it usually takes one to two days.

Do you need permission in Wimbledon?

Replacing a rooflight in an English home is a controlled fitting: it has to be self-certified by a scheme-registered installer or notified to building control. We are not registered with a competent person scheme, so replacements we fit are notified with a building notice, and the new unit has to meet current energy limits. Adding a new one usually means a building regulations application, because joists or rafters are trimmed. On the planning side, most house rooflights are permitted development if they project 0.15 m or less; on a side slope the glass must be obscured and fixed unless the opening part is over 1.7 m above the floor.

Before you get in touch

Start with your phone. Take a picture of the roof where the unit goes or already sits, then one from inside looking up. Measure what you can, even roughly. Tell us what the roof is covered with and how a fitter would reach it: ladder, garden access or scaffold. Bought it already? Send the link or spec. Add your full postcode, for example in SW19, and we can price it.

Common questions in Wimbledon

Do you cover Wimbledon?

Yes. Fitters travel to addresses in Wimbledon and the surrounding districts, including SW19. We do not run an office there; the survey and the fitting happen at your property. A few island and remote postcodes are covered by arrangement; if yours is one, we confirm travel and dates before quoting.

Do you need scaffolding to fit a rooflight?

Not always. Single-storey roofs can often be reached safely with ladders, a tower or edge protection. Higher roofs, steep pitches and large units usually need scaffold or a mobile platform, and heavy glass may need a crane. We assess access from your photos or at the survey, and any scaffold or lifting cost is shown as its own line on the written quote.

What if my roof opening is the wrong size for the walk-on rooflight?

We find out before the fitting day, not on it. If the opening is slightly out, it can usually be adjusted by trimming or by packing out the upstand. If it is a long way off, the choice is between altering the opening and changing the unit. Bear in mind that rooflights are often sold by builder's opening size rather than external size, so check which one your measurement refers to.
