Rooflight upstands & kerbs in Worcester Park

A kerb that is a few millimetres out of square, or a little too low once the roof covering goes on, can stop a rooflight sealing properly. That is why upstand work in Worcester Park starts with measuring the opening, the roof build-up and the unit's kerb size together. The upstand is then built from treated timber, insulated and weathered into the membrane, felt or fibreglass. You get a written quote first and a note of the sizes it was built to.

Is your address covered?

Jobs across KT4, KT3 and SM3 are part of our normal cover for Worcester Park. We are not an office on the high street. Our fitting teams come out to the property from wherever they are working that week. Neighbouring places such as New Malden and Ewell are covered on the same terms, so a house on the edge of town is no harder to book than one in the centre.

Included in the work

  • Kerb sized from the maker's drawing, internal and external dimensions both checked
  • Roof membrane turned up, bonded and finished at the kerb top
  • Insulation fitted to the upstand faces to limit heat loss
  • Height above the finished roof — We set the upstand so it stands at least 150 mm above the finished roof, measured from the top of any ballast, paving or walkway.
  • Roof covering compatibility — We check what the roof is covered in before choosing how the membrane meets the kerb.

Fitting your rooflight upstand, step by step

On the day, the fitters check the opening and the roof deck around it, then cut and fix treated timber to the maker's kerb size, square and level, with any fall the rooflight needs built in. Insulation goes on the faces that need it, and the roof membrane is turned up and dressed so the kerb is weathertight before anyone leaves. Most upstand jobs take half a day to a day.

Planning and building rules in England

In England, a new rooflight opening generally needs building regulations approval because the roof structure is altered and the glazing must meet energy rules: 2.2 W/m²K for a rooflight in an existing home, or 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B) for a roof window. Planning is often not needed on a house: permitted development covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof slope and sit below the highest part of the roof. Flats, listed buildings and areas with an Article 4 direction are different, so we check your address first.

What to send for a quick quote

What we cannot see, we have to guess, and guesses make quotes wider. So the more you send, the tighter the price. Useful: shots from the roof or garden, shots from the room underneath, a rough width and length, the roof finish, any access problems, and the product page if you have already ordered. Add the property postcode around KT4 and we will come back with a quote or a survey date.

Common questions in Worcester Park

Can you fit a rooflight in winter or when it is raining?

Yes, within limits. Cold is less of a problem than wet, because membranes, primers and sealants need a dry surface to bond. We plan fitting days around the forecast and may move a date if heavy rain is due. If the roof has to be opened up, it is not left overnight without a temporary weather seal, so the room below stays dry while the work is finished.

How does payment work?

Payment terms are set out on your written quote before you accept it. Depending on the job, that may mean a deposit, stage payments for larger work, or payment on completion. The contract is with S&K Property Investments and Improvement Ltd, part of the S&K Group. Nothing is added without your agreement: if something unexpected comes up, we discuss it and agree any change before carrying on.

Can you remove and dispose of the old rooflight?

Yes. Taking out the old unit is part of any replacement job, and it leaves with the rest of the waste unless you ask to keep it. Old domes, glass and frames go through proper waste routes. If removal turns up a rotten kerb or damaged decking, we show you what we have found and agree the repair with you before going any further.
