Rooflight upstands & kerbs in West Ham

Replacing an old dome or a failed rooflight often means the kerb underneath has to change too: it may be rotten, too low for the new unit or the wrong size. We strip back what is needed, build a new upstand in West Ham to the new unit's dimensions, insulate it and dress the roof covering up to it. Where only part of the kerb has failed, we say so and price the smaller repair. The scope is set out in a written quote before work starts.

Is your address covered?

Our fitters come to you. For West Ham that covers E13, E15 and E7, plus nearby Stratford and Canning Town. We do not keep a yard or showroom in the area, and you do not need to visit one. The survey happens at your property or, for fit-only work, from the photos you send. Dates follow fitter availability, which we confirm when you accept the quote.

What we do on the day

  • Diagonals measured so the kerb is square before anything sits on it
  • Kerb sized from the maker's drawing, internal and external dimensions both checked
  • Insulation fitted to the upstand faces to limit heat loss
  • Height above the finished roof — We set the upstand so it stands at least 150 mm above the finished roof, measured from the top of any ballast, paving or walkway.
  • Roof covering compatibility — We check what the roof is covered in before choosing how the membrane meets the kerb.

Fitting your rooflight upstand, step by step

Building an upstand starts with the rooflight's own drawing: its kerb size, height above the finished roof and fall. The team sets the timber out to those figures, checks the diagonals, insulates the outer faces and dresses the membrane up and over. If the rooflight is going on the same day, it is fitted next; if not, the kerb is protected until it does.

Planning and building rules in England

England's rules in short: permitted development usually covers a rooflight on a house roof provided it doesn't stick out more than 0.15 m or rise above the ridge, though a listed building always needs consent and some streets have Article 4 directions. Building regulations apply to new openings, and replacements go through building control; as we are not registered with a competent person scheme, we use a building notice and show the fee on the quote. The energy limit for rooflights in existing homes is 2.2 W/m²K, and the 2026 Approved Document L, in force from 24 March 2027, keeps that figure.

Before you get in touch

Each detail you send takes a question off our list. Photos inside and out show the opening and the ceiling. Rough measurements tell us the unit size. The roof covering tells us how it will be sealed in. Access notes tell us whether a tower or scaffold is needed. A product link, if you have one, lets us check it against the opening. Your postcode, E13 or nearby, confirms travel.

Common questions in West Ham

What is included in the price?

The written quote lists it line by line. Typically that covers fitting labour, fixings, sealants, membrane or flashing materials, any upstand work, internal finishing if agreed, and taking away the waste. For supply and fit, the unit itself is included too. Scaffold, lifting gear and any third-party fees, where needed, are shown separately so you can see what each part of the job costs.

Do you need scaffolding to fit a rooflight?

Not always. Single-storey roofs can often be reached safely with ladders, a tower or edge protection. Higher roofs, steep pitches and large units usually need scaffold or a mobile platform, and heavy glass may need a crane. We assess access from your photos or at the survey, and any scaffold or lifting cost is shown as its own line on the written quote.

Does a rooflight need building regulations approval?

A new opening usually needs building regulations approval. A replacement is a controlled fitting: it must be self-certified by an installer registered with a competent person scheme or notified to building control. We are not registered with a scheme, so replacements we fit are notified to building control with a building notice, and the council's fee is shown on your quote.
