Rooflight upstands & kerbs in Hounslow

A kerb that is a few millimetres out of square, or a little too low once the roof covering goes on, can stop a rooflight sealing properly. That is why upstand work in Hounslow starts with measuring the opening, the roof build-up and the unit's kerb size together. The upstand is then built from treated timber, insulated and weathered into the membrane, felt or fibreglass. You get a written quote first and a note of the sizes it was built to.

Fitting across Hounslow and nearby

Jobs across TW3, TW4 and TW5 are part of our normal cover for Hounslow. We are not an office on the high street. Our fitting teams come out to the property from wherever they are working that week. Neighbouring places such as Isleworth and Heston are covered on the same terms, so a house on the edge of town is no harder to book than one in the centre.

On the day, we cover

  • Height set above the finished roof to the maker's stated minimum
  • Fall built into the kerb where the rooflight needs one
  • Treated timber frame fixed down to the deck and joists
  • Size tolerance on the kerb — We build kerbs to a tight tolerance because rooflight glass is made to order and cannot be trimmed on site.
  • Roof covering compatibility — We check what the roof is covered in before choosing how the membrane meets the kerb.

Fitting your rooflight upstand, step by step

The fitters measure twice before cutting: the opening, the rooflight's kerb size and the finished roof level. The kerb is built, packed level or to the maker's fall, insulated and weathered into the roof covering. You are left with an upstand ready for the rooflight, and a note of the sizes it was built to.

Planning and building rules in England

In England, a new rooflight opening generally needs building regulations approval because the roof structure is altered and the glazing must meet energy rules: 2.2 W/m²K for a rooflight in an existing home, or 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B) for a roof window. Planning is often not needed on a house: permitted development covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof slope and sit below the highest part of the roof. Flats, listed buildings and areas with an Article 4 direction are different, so we check your address first.

Before you get in touch

What we cannot see, we have to guess, and guesses make quotes wider. So the more you send, the tighter the price. Useful: shots from the roof or garden, shots from the room underneath, a rough width and length, the roof finish, any access problems, and the product page if you have already ordered. Add the property postcode around TW3 and we will come back with a quote or a survey date.

Common questions in Hounslow

Do I need planning permission for a rooflight in Hounslow?

Often not. Many rooflights fall under permitted development, provided they do not project beyond the national limit and meet the other conditions that apply in England. Conservation areas, listed buildings and some flats are different and may need consent. Because the rules depend on the property, we confirm what is likely to apply at your address and point you to the planning authority where an application is needed.

Can you fit a rooflight in winter or when it is raining?

Yes, within limits. Cold is less of a problem than wet, because membranes, primers and sealants need a dry surface to bond. We plan fitting days around the forecast and may move a date if heavy rain is due. If the roof has to be opened up, it is not left overnight without a temporary weather seal, so the room below stays dry while the work is finished.

Do you offer trade rates for builders and roofers?

We carry out subcontract fitting for builders, roofers, extension companies and commercial contractors. Pricing is per job or per schedule of units, agreed in writing before we start. We can work to your programme, fit on your upstand or build our own, and leave the opening ready for the next trade. Send drawings or a unit schedule and we will come back with a trade quote.
