Rooflight upstands & kerbs in Crewe

Replacing an old dome or a failed rooflight often means the kerb underneath has to change too: it may be rotten, too low for the new unit or the wrong size. We strip back what is needed, build a new upstand in Crewe to the new unit's dimensions, insulate it and dress the roof covering up to it. Where only part of the kerb has failed, we say so and price the smaller repair. The scope is set out in a written quote before work starts.

Is your address covered?

Looking at a property near Crewe but not quite in it? We work across CW1, CW2 and CW5 and outwards to Nantwich, Sandbach and Winsford. Give us the full postcode when you get in touch, because access, parking and the route for a large unit all depend on the exact street. Those details shape the quote for any job around Crewe.

Included in the work

  • Height set above the finished roof to the maker's stated minimum
  • Diagonals measured so the kerb is square before anything sits on it
  • Roof membrane turned up, bonded and finished at the kerb top
  • Height above the finished roof — We set the upstand so it stands at least 150 mm above the finished roof, measured from the top of any ballast, paving or walkway.
  • Energy limit for site-built kerbs — We insulate upstands to meet the limit for site-built upstands, which is 0.35 W/m²K in England and Wales.

Fitting your rooflight upstand, step by step

The fitters measure twice before cutting: the opening, the rooflight's kerb size and the finished roof level. The kerb is built, packed level or to the maker's fall, insulated and weathered into the roof covering. You are left with an upstand ready for the rooflight, and a note of the sizes it was built to.

Do you need permission in Crewe?

Replacing a rooflight in an English home is a controlled fitting: it has to be self-certified by a scheme-registered installer or notified to building control. We are not registered with a competent person scheme, so replacements we fit are notified with a building notice, and the new unit has to meet current energy limits. Adding a new one usually means a building regulations application, because joists or rafters are trimmed. On the planning side, most house rooflights are permitted development if they project 0.15 m or less; on a side slope the glass must be obscured and fixed unless the opening part is over 1.7 m above the floor.

Help us quote accurately

What we cannot see, we have to guess, and guesses make quotes wider. So the more you send, the tighter the price. Useful: shots from the roof or garden, shots from the room underneath, a rough width and length, the roof finish, any access problems, and the product page if you have already ordered. Add the property postcode around CW1 and we will come back with a quote or a survey date.

Common questions in Crewe

Can you remove and dispose of the old rooflight?

Yes. Taking out the old unit is part of any replacement job, and it leaves with the rest of the waste unless you ask to keep it. Old domes, glass and frames go through proper waste routes. If removal turns up a rotten kerb or damaged decking, we show you what we have found and agree the repair with you before going any further.

Do I need planning permission for a rooflight in Crewe?

Often not. Many rooflights fall under permitted development, provided they do not project beyond the national limit and meet the other conditions that apply in England. Conservation areas, listed buildings and some flats are different and may need consent. Because the rules depend on the property, we confirm what is likely to apply at your address and point you to the planning authority where an application is needed.

Do you cover Crewe?

Yes. Fitters travel to addresses in Crewe and the surrounding districts, including CW1. We do not run an office there; the survey and the fitting happen at your property. A few island and remote postcodes are covered by arrangement; if yours is one, we confirm travel and dates before quoting.
