Guide ranges for labour only, ex VAT for trade accounts. Your price is fixed in a written quote after we have seen photos or surveyed. Scaffold, access towers or a crane are priced separately if the job needs them, and building control fees, where a job needs them, are shown as their own line.
Where our fitters travel
Fitters travel to the job, so the address is what counts. In Porthcawl that means postcode districts CF36, CF33 and CF31, and the same teams can just as easily take on work in Bridgend, about 6 miles away, or Maesteg at roughly 9 miles. Survey and fitting dates are offered according to fitter availability, and travel is built into the quote rather than added later.
What we do on the day
- Roof lanterns assembled and glazed on your upstand
- Supplied units checked against your schedule before fitting
- Upstands checked for size, height, level and square
- Programme and access — We confirm site access, lifting arrangements and working hours before the visit.
- Deliveries and damage — We check delivered units against the schedule before fitting.
How a fitting day runs
Arrive and agree the plan. Sheet the floor and furniture. Set up the ladder, tower or scaffold. Check the opening, the upstand or flashing, and the unit against the paperwork. Fix and pack a rooflight level. Seal it into the roof. Line the reveal or fit the ceiling trim. Clean the glass, clear the waste, and talk you through it. That is the shape of most fitting days, and for this type of job it usually takes half a day to a day per unit.
Do you need permission in Porthcawl?
In Wales, a new rooflight opening generally needs building regulations approval, and a replacement needs either a scheme-registered installer's certificate or a building notice to the council. We are not registered with a scheme, so on replacements we agree up front who gives the building notice. Rooflights must meet 2.2 W/m²K and roof windows 1.4 W/m²K. Planning is tighter than in England: rooflights are not permitted development in conservation areas, National Parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty or World Heritage Sites, so we check your address before quoting.
Details that speed up your quote
Each detail you send takes a question off our list. Photos inside and out show the opening and the ceiling. Rough measurements tell us the unit size. The roof covering tells us how it will be sealed in. Access notes tell us whether a tower or scaffold is needed. A product link, if you have one, lets us check it against the opening. Your postcode, CF36 or nearby, confirms travel.
Common questions in Porthcawl
What if my roof opening is the wrong size for the rooflight?
We find out before the fitting day, not on it. If the opening is slightly out, it can usually be adjusted by trimming or by packing out the upstand. If it is a long way off, the choice is between altering the opening and changing the unit. Bear in mind that rooflights are often sold by builder's opening size rather than external size, so check which one your measurement refers to.
Who deals with building control on trade jobs?
On new-build and extension work the rooflights usually sit within your approval or warrant. On replacements in homes in England and Wales we agree up front who notifies building control; we are not registered with a competent person scheme, so we cannot self-certify.
Can you remove and dispose of the old rooflight?
Yes. Taking out the old unit is part of any replacement job, and it leaves with the rest of the waste unless you ask to keep it. Old domes, glass and frames go through proper waste routes. If removal turns up a rotten kerb or damaged decking, we show you what we have found and agree the repair with you before going any further.
