Sun tunnel installation in Wolverhampton

Rooflight work is weather work. Membranes, primers and sealants all want a dry surface, so a fitting day in Wolverhampton is planned around the forecast rather than pinned to a date regardless of rain. The opening is kept covered whenever it is exposed, and a roof is not left open overnight without a proper temporary seal. That approach applies to every sun tunnel we install, from a new opening to a straight swap or a fit-only job. We cover Wolverhampton, the WV1 district and the rest of West Midlands.

Covering WV1 and neighbouring districts

Jobs across WV1, WV2 and WV3 are part of our normal cover for Wolverhampton. We are not an office on the high street. Our fitting teams come out to the property from wherever they are working that week. Neighbouring places such as Wednesfield and Willenhall are covered on the same terms, so a house on the edge of town is no harder to book than one in the centre.

Fit-only or supply and fit

A damaged delivery is a frequent snag on fit-only work. Before the day, unpack a sun tunnel, photograph it, and tell the seller about any cracks or scuffs, because claims are much easier made early. We will also ask for the model or a link, so we can read the maker's instructions and check the opening size and the flashing kit it expects. If everything lines up, we fit it. If not, we explain what needs changing first.

Included in the work

  • Dome fixed and sealed on top of the flashing
  • Roof opening cut and the flashing fitted to tiles, slates or a flat-roof kit
  • Route through the loft checked for joists, cables and pipes
  • Condensation in cold lofts — We insulate the tube where it passes through a cold loft.
  • Length and bends in the tube — We plan the shortest, straightest route we can between the roof and the ceiling.

From arrival to clean-up

Protection comes before tools. Floors, furniture and stairs get covered, and the ceiling below the opening is sheeted to catch dust. Up top, the fitters confirm the opening is square and the upstand or flashing suits what the maker specifies. Fixing follows, then weather-sealing into the membrane, felt or tiles. Only once the roof is tight do they turn to the internal reveal. Time on site for a sun tunnel: half a day to a day, weather permitting.

Planning, building control and Wolverhampton

Two sets of rules matter in England. Planning: a rooflight on a house is normally permitted development if it projects no more than 0.15 m and stays below the highest part of the roof, but flats, listed buildings and Article 4 areas need checking. Building regulations: new openings need approval for the structure and energy performance, and a replacement is a controlled fitting. We are not registered with a competent person scheme, so we notify replacements to building control with a building notice and put the council's fee on the quote.

Getting a price from photos

A fast quote needs five things: a photo of the roof from outside, one from the room below, rough sizes of the opening or the space, the roof covering (felt, single-ply, fibreglass, tiles, slate or metal), and a note on access. If you have already bought the unit, add the product link or spec sheet. And give us the postcode, WV1 or a neighbouring district.

Common questions in Wolverhampton

What if my roof opening is the wrong size for the sun tunnel?

We find out before the fitting day, not on it. If the opening is slightly out, it can usually be adjusted by trimming or by packing out the upstand. If it is a long way off, the choice is between altering the opening and changing the unit. Bear in mind that rooflights are often sold by builder's opening size rather than external size, so check which one your measurement refers to.

Do you make good inside after fitting?

Yes, where the quote includes it. Internal finishing usually means lining the reveal with plasterboard, taping or skimming, and fitting trim where it meets the ceiling. Some people prefer their own plasterer or decorator to finish off, which is fine. The written quote spells out exactly where our work stops, so nobody is left guessing about who does what once the unit is in.

Does a rooflight need building regulations approval?

A new opening usually needs building regulations approval. A replacement is a controlled fitting: it must be self-certified by an installer registered with a competent person scheme or notified to building control. We are not registered with a scheme, so replacements we fit are notified to building control with a building notice, and the council's fee is shown on your quote.

Send a few photos and your WV1 postcode, and we will put together a written quote for the job.
