Sun tunnel installation in Penarth

Plenty of rooflight trouble starts with a tape measure. Units are often sold by the builder's opening, meaning the hole in the roof, rather than the overall external size, and confusing the two leaves you with a frame that does not suit the opening. Before we fit any sun tunnel in Penarth, we measure the opening, the upstand or kerb where there is one, and the finished roof level, then compare them with the maker's drawing. If something is out, you hear about it before the fitting day rather than on it. That single check keeps most jobs like this on track.

Fitting across Penarth and nearby

If you also own a property or a business unit in Cardiff, Barry or Caerphilly, that is no problem. We can survey and quote both, and where it suits, line the fitting days up together. Every address is reached by fitters travelling to it from their current jobs, and CF64, CF10 and CF11 sit comfortably within that pattern.

Buying your own, or letting us supply

There are two ways to do this. Supply and fit means we source a sun tunnel that suits your roof and install it, so one company answers for both the product choice and the fitting. Fit-only means you buy the unit and we install it. With fit-only, the product warranty stays with the maker or seller, and our written guarantee covers the fitting work. Both routes get the same checks on the opening, the upstand and the maker's instructions before anything is fixed.

Included in the work

  • Rigid or flexible tube run and joined, with as few bends as possible
  • Dust cleared from the room below and the loft
  • Dome fixed and sealed on top of the flashing
  • Condensation in cold lofts — We insulate the tube where it passes through a cold loft.
  • Length and bends in the tube — We plan the shortest, straightest route we can between the roof and the ceiling.

A typical installation day

Protection comes before tools. Floors, furniture and stairs get covered, and the ceiling below the opening is sheeted to catch dust. Up top, the fitters confirm the opening is square and the upstand or flashing suits what the maker specifies. Fixing follows, then weather-sealing into the membrane, felt or tiles. Only once the roof is tight do they turn to the internal reveal. Time on site for a sun tunnel: half a day to a day, weather permitting.

Do you need permission in Penarth?

Welsh rules differ from England's in one important way: rooflights lose permitted development rights in conservation areas, National Parks, AONBs and World Heritage Sites. Elsewhere on a house, a rooflight that projects no more than 150 mm and stays below the highest part of the roof is usually fine. Building regulations still apply to new openings, replacements we fit go through a building notice because we are not scheme-registered, and the energy limit for rooflights is 2.2 W/m²K. A new Welsh Approved Document L takes effect on 4 March 2027.

Details that speed up your quote

A fast quote needs five things: a photo of the roof from outside, one from the room below, rough sizes of the opening or the space, the roof covering (felt, single-ply, fibreglass, tiles, slate or metal), and a note on access. If you have already bought the unit, add the product link or spec sheet. And give us the postcode, CF64 or a neighbouring district.

Common questions in Penarth

Can you remove and dispose of the old rooflight?

Yes. Taking out the old unit is part of any replacement job, and it leaves with the rest of the waste unless you ask to keep it. Old domes, glass and frames go through proper waste routes. If removal turns up a rotten kerb or damaged decking, we show you what we have found and agree the repair with you before going any further.

Can you fit the sun tunnel I bought online?

Yes, fit-only is one of our core services. Send the product link or spec, photos of the roof and rough sizes, and we can usually price it from those. Before fitting we check the delivery for damage, which should be reported to the seller, plus the size against the opening, the flashing kit and the roof pitch. The product warranty stays with the maker or seller, and our guarantee covers the fitting.

What if my roof opening is the wrong size for the sun tunnel?

We find out before the fitting day, not on it. If the opening is slightly out, it can usually be adjusted by trimming or by packing out the upstand. If it is a long way off, the choice is between altering the opening and changing the unit. Bear in mind that rooflights are often sold by builder's opening size rather than external size, so check which one your measurement refers to.

Send a few photos and your CF64 postcode, and we will put together a written quote for the job.
