Sun tunnel installation in Ripon

Plenty of rooflight trouble starts with a tape measure. Units are often sold by the builder's opening, meaning the hole in the roof, rather than the overall external size, and confusing the two leaves you with a frame that does not suit the opening. Before we fit any sun tunnel in Ripon, we measure the opening, the upstand or kerb where there is one, and the finished roof level, then compare them with the maker's drawing. If something is out, you hear about it before the fitting day rather than on it. That single check keeps most jobs like this on track.

Is your address covered?

Fitters travel to the job, so the address is what counts. In Ripon that means postcode districts HG4, YO51 and HG3, and the same teams can just as easily take on work in Harrogate, about 10 miles away, or Northallerton at roughly 15 miles. Survey and fitting dates are offered according to fitter availability, and travel is built into the quote rather than added later.

Your sun tunnels or ours

Which works out better, buying your own or letting us supply? It depends on what you value. Buying your own gives you control of the product and what you pay for it. Letting us supply puts the whole job, unit and fitting, under one written quote. On a customer-supplied unit we still measure it against the opening, look at the upstand, and inspect the condition it arrived in. Warranty on the product sits with whoever sold it, while the fitting carries our own guarantee.

What the job includes

  • Rigid or flexible tube run and joined, with as few bends as possible
  • Tube insulated where it passes through a cold loft
  • Dome fixed and sealed on top of the flashing
  • Rigid or flexible tube — We check whether a rigid tube will fit the route before falling back on a flexible one.
  • Condensation in cold lofts — We insulate the tube where it passes through a cold loft.

A typical installation day

Protection comes before tools. Floors, furniture and stairs get covered, and the ceiling below the opening is sheeted to catch dust. Up top, the fitters confirm the opening is square and the upstand or flashing suits what the maker specifies. Fixing follows, then weather-sealing into the membrane, felt or tiles. Only once the roof is tight do they turn to the internal reveal. Time on site for a sun tunnel: half a day to a day, weather permitting.

Planning, building control and Ripon

In England, a new rooflight opening generally needs building regulations approval because the roof structure is altered and the glazing must meet energy rules: 2.2 W/m²K for a rooflight in an existing home, or 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B) for a roof window. Planning is often not needed on a house: permitted development covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof slope and sit below the highest part of the roof. Flats, listed buildings and areas with an Article 4 direction are different, so we check your address first.

Getting a price from photos

Start with your phone. Take a picture of the roof where the unit goes or already sits, then one from inside looking up. Measure what you can, even roughly. Tell us what the roof is covered with and how a fitter would reach it: ladder, garden access or scaffold. Bought it already? Send the link or spec. Add your full postcode, for example in HG4, and we can price it.

Common questions in Ripon

Can you fit a rooflight in winter or when it is raining?

Yes, within limits. Cold is less of a problem than wet, because membranes, primers and sealants need a dry surface to bond. We plan fitting days around the forecast and may move a date if heavy rain is due. If the roof has to be opened up, it is not left overnight without a temporary weather seal, so the room below stays dry while the work is finished.

Will my new sun tunnel leak?

A correctly fitted unit should not. Leaks usually trace back to the detail around the frame: an upstand that is too low, a membrane or flashing that is not dressed properly, sealant applied to a damp surface, or water ponding against the kerb. We fit to the maker's instructions and check each of those points. The fitting carries a written workmanship guarantee, with its terms set out on your quote.

How does payment work?

Payment terms are set out on your written quote before you accept it. Depending on the job, that may mean a deposit, stage payments for larger work, or payment on completion. The contract is with S&K Property Investments and Improvement Ltd, part of the S&K Group. Nothing is added without your agreement: if something unexpected comes up, we discuss it and agree any change before carrying on.

Send a few photos and your HG4 postcode, and we will put together a written quote for the job.
