Sun tunnel installation in Harrow

Rooflight work is weather work. Membranes, primers and sealants all want a dry surface, so a fitting day in Harrow is planned around the forecast rather than pinned to a date regardless of rain. The opening is kept covered whenever it is exposed, and a roof is not left open overnight without a proper temporary seal. That approach applies to every sun tunnel we install, from a new opening to a straight swap or a fit-only job. We cover Harrow, the HA1 district and the rest of Greater London.

Where our fitters travel

Our fitters come to you. For Harrow that covers HA1, HA3 and HA2, plus nearby Wealdstone and Brent. We do not keep a yard or showroom in the area, and you do not need to visit one. The survey happens at your property or, for fit-only work, from the photos you send. Dates follow fitter availability, which we confirm when you accept the quote.

Buying your own, or letting us supply

If you have bought a sun tunnel yourself, we check four things before fitting. First, the delivery: open it, look for chips, cracks and bent frames, and report any damage to the seller straight away. Second, the size, measured against the builder's opening rather than the external frame. Third, the flashing kit and the roof pitch range. Fourth, the maker's instructions, which set the fixings and sealing. Product warranty claims go to the seller and maker; our guarantee is for how it was fitted.

What the job includes

  • Tube insulated where it passes through a cold loft
  • Route through the loft checked for joists, cables and pipes
  • Dust cleared from the room below and the loft
  • Rigid or flexible tube — We check whether a rigid tube will fit the route before falling back on a flexible one.
  • Length and bends in the tube — We plan the shortest, straightest route we can between the roof and the ceiling.

A typical installation day

On the day, you need to be in at the start and at the end. In between, the fitters get on with it. They will want the room below cleared where possible, a parking spot if you have one, and somewhere to set the unit down safely. After checking the opening and the upstand or flashing, they fix a sun tunnel, seal it and finish the inside. Packaging and any old unit leave with them unless the quote says otherwise.

Planning and building rules in England

In England, a new rooflight opening generally needs building regulations approval because the roof structure is altered and the glazing must meet energy rules: 2.2 W/m²K for a rooflight in an existing home, or 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B) for a roof window. Planning is often not needed on a house: permitted development covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof slope and sit below the highest part of the roof. Flats, listed buildings and areas with an Article 4 direction are different, so we check your address first.

Getting a price from photos

Each detail you send takes a question off our list. Photos inside and out show the opening and the ceiling. Rough measurements tell us the unit size. The roof covering tells us how it will be sealed in. Access notes tell us whether a tower or scaffold is needed. A product link, if you have one, lets us check it against the opening. Your postcode, HA1 or nearby, confirms travel.

Common questions in Harrow

Do I need planning permission for a rooflight in Harrow?

Often not. Many rooflights fall under permitted development, provided they do not project beyond the national limit and meet the other conditions that apply in England. Conservation areas, listed buildings and some flats are different and may need consent. Because the rules depend on the property, we confirm what is likely to apply at your address and point you to the planning authority where an application is needed.

What if my roof opening is the wrong size for the sun tunnel?

We find out before the fitting day, not on it. If the opening is slightly out, it can usually be adjusted by trimming or by packing out the upstand. If it is a long way off, the choice is between altering the opening and changing the unit. Bear in mind that rooflights are often sold by builder's opening size rather than external size, so check which one your measurement refers to.

How long does fitting take?

Fitting a sun tunnel into an existing, correctly sized opening is often a day's work. New openings take longer, because joists or rafters need trimming, an upstand or flashing has to be built or fitted, and the inside needs finishing. Large units that need lifting gear, and days lost to rain, can stretch things further. Your written quote gives a realistic estimate for your roof.
