Sun tunnel installation in Falkirk

Rooflight work is weather work. Membranes, primers and sealants all want a dry surface, so a fitting day in Falkirk is planned around the forecast rather than pinned to a date regardless of rain. The opening is kept covered whenever it is exposed, and a roof is not left open overnight without a proper temporary seal. That approach applies to every sun tunnel we install, from a new opening to a straight swap or a fit-only job. We cover Falkirk, the FK1 district and the rest of Stirling & Falkirk.

Covering FK1 and neighbouring districts

If you also own a property or a business unit in Grangemouth, Alloa or Cumbernauld, that is no problem. We can survey and quote both, and where it suits, line the fitting days up together. Every address is reached by fitters travelling to it from their current jobs, and FK1, FK2 and FK5 sit comfortably within that pattern.

Already bought your unit?

A damaged delivery is a frequent snag on fit-only work. Before the day, unpack a sun tunnel, photograph it, and tell the seller about any cracks or scuffs, because claims are much easier made early. We will also ask for the model or a link, so we can read the maker's instructions and check the opening size and the flashing kit it expects. If everything lines up, we fit it. If not, we explain what needs changing first.

Included in the work

  • Tube insulated where it passes through a cold loft
  • Dome fixed and sealed on top of the flashing
  • Dust cleared from the room below and the loft
  • Flat or pitched roof kit — We confirm the roof type and covering before ordering the kit.
  • Tube size — We match the tube size to the room and the roof.

How a fitting day runs

Protection comes before tools. Floors, furniture and stairs get covered, and the ceiling below the opening is sheeted to catch dust. Up top, the fitters confirm the opening is square and the upstand or flashing suits what the maker specifies. Fixing follows, then weather-sealing into the membrane, felt or tiles. Only once the roof is tight do they turn to the internal reveal. Time on site for a sun tunnel: half a day to a day, weather permitting.

Planning, building warrants and Falkirk

For Scottish homes: building warrant for new rooflight openings; no warrant for replacing a rooflight complete with its frame, provided it meets the standards, including 1.6 W/m²K; planning permission in conservation areas and listed building consent for listed properties. Outside those, permitted development usually covers house rooflights, but the planning authority has the final word, so we check before you commit.

Help us quote accurately

Each detail you send takes a question off our list. Photos inside and out show the opening and the ceiling. Rough measurements tell us the unit size. The roof covering tells us how it will be sealed in. Access notes tell us whether a tower or scaffold is needed. A product link, if you have one, lets us check it against the opening. Your postcode, FK1 or nearby, confirms travel.

Common questions in Falkirk

What is included in the price?

The written quote lists it line by line. Typically that covers fitting labour, fixings, sealants, membrane or flashing materials, any upstand work, internal finishing if agreed, and taking away the waste. For supply and fit, the unit itself is included too. Scaffold, lifting gear and any third-party fees, where needed, are shown separately so you can see what each part of the job costs.

Do I need planning permission for a rooflight in Falkirk?

Often not. Many rooflights fall under permitted development, provided they do not project beyond the national limit and meet the other conditions that apply in Scotland. Conservation areas, listed buildings and some flats are different and may need consent. Because the rules depend on the property, we confirm what is likely to apply at your address and point you to the planning authority where an application is needed.

What if my roof opening is the wrong size for the sun tunnel?

We find out before the fitting day, not on it. If the opening is slightly out, it can usually be adjusted by trimming or by packing out the upstand. If it is a long way off, the choice is between altering the opening and changing the unit. Bear in mind that rooflights are often sold by builder's opening size rather than external size, so check which one your measurement refers to.
