Sun tunnel installation in Derry/Londonderry

Already bought a sun tunnel, or still deciding which one to get? Both are fine. For sun tunnel installation in Derry/Londonderry we either source a suitable unit and install it, or fit the one waiting in your garage. Fit-only jobs are usually priced from your photos and measurements, while supply-and-fit and replacement jobs get a free survey first. Whichever route you take, the opening, the upstand or flashing, and the delivery are checked before anything is fixed down. Properties in BT48 and the surrounding districts are covered on the same terms.

Covering BT48 and neighbouring districts

Covering Derry/Londonderry means covering the people who live and work there, not a single postcode. We take on domestic and commercial jobs in BT48, BT47 and BT49, and are happy to quote further out in Coleraine and Omagh. If your address sits between towns, tell us and we will confirm whether it falls in our normal area or needs travel set out separately on the quote.

Buying your own, or letting us supply

A damaged delivery is a frequent snag on fit-only work. Before the day, unpack a sun tunnel, photograph it, and tell the seller about any cracks or scuffs, because claims are much easier made early. We will also ask for the model or a link, so we can read the maker's instructions and check the opening size and the flashing kit it expects. If everything lines up, we fit it. If not, we explain what needs changing first.

On the day, we cover

  • Route through the loft checked for joists, cables and pipes
  • Tube insulated where it passes through a cold loft
  • Rigid or flexible tube run and joined, with as few bends as possible
  • Tube size — We match the tube size to the room and the roof.
  • Length and bends in the tube — We plan the shortest, straightest route we can between the roof and the ceiling.

Fitting your sun tunnel, step by step

On the day, you need to be in at the start and at the end. In between, the fitters get on with it. They will want the room below cleared where possible, a parking spot if you have one, and somewhere to set the unit down safely. After checking the opening and the upstand or flashing, they fix a sun tunnel, seal it and finish the inside. Packaging and any old unit leave with them unless the quote says otherwise.

Do you need permission in Derry/Londonderry?

Northern Ireland has its own rules. Permitted development for rooflights on a house requires the unit to sit below the highest part of the roof, project no more than 15 cm where the slope faces a road, and stay at least half a metre from the ridge, eaves, party wall and verge. It doesn't apply in conservation areas or within the grounds of a listed building. For building control, structural roof alterations need an application, and rooflights must meet WER Band C or 1.6 W/m²K.

What to send for a quick quote

What we cannot see, we have to guess, and guesses make quotes wider. So the more you send, the tighter the price. Useful: shots from the roof or garden, shots from the room underneath, a rough width and length, the roof finish, any access problems, and the product page if you have already ordered. Add the property postcode around BT48 and we will come back with a quote or a survey date.

Common questions in Derry/Londonderry

Will my new sun tunnel leak?

A correctly fitted unit should not. Leaks usually trace back to the detail around the frame: an upstand that is too low, a membrane or flashing that is not dressed properly, sealant applied to a damp surface, or water ponding against the kerb. We fit to the maker's instructions and check each of those points. The fitting carries a written workmanship guarantee, with its terms set out on your quote.

Can you remove and dispose of the old rooflight?

Yes. Taking out the old unit is part of any replacement job, and it leaves with the rest of the waste unless you ask to keep it. Old domes, glass and frames go through proper waste routes. If removal turns up a rotten kerb or damaged decking, we show you what we have found and agree the repair with you before going any further.

Does a rooflight need building control approval?

In Northern Ireland a new opening alters the roof structure, so expect a building control application; confirm the position with your council, including for replacements. The new rooflight must meet WER Band C or 1.6 W/m²K. We confirm what applies before you commit.
