Sliding rooflight installation in Leicester

Rooflight work is weather work. Membranes, primers and sealants all want a dry surface, so a fitting day in Leicester is planned around the forecast rather than pinned to a date regardless of rain. The opening is kept covered whenever it is exposed, and a roof is not left open overnight without a proper temporary seal. That approach applies to every sliding rooflight we install, from a new opening to a straight swap or a fit-only job. We cover Leicester, the LE1 district and the rest of Leicestershire.

Where our fitters travel

Fitters travel to the job, so the address is what counts. In Leicester that means postcode districts LE1, LE4 and LE5, and the same teams can just as easily take on work in Humberstone, about 2 miles away, or Braunstone at roughly 2 miles. Survey and fitting dates are offered according to fitter availability, and travel is built into the quote rather than added later.

Already bought your unit?

If you have bought a sliding rooflight yourself, we check four things before fitting. First, the delivery: open it, look for chips, cracks and bent frames, and report any damage to the seller straight away. Second, the size, measured against the builder's opening rather than the external frame. Third, the upstand height above the finished roof. Fourth, the maker's instructions, which set the fixings and sealing. Product warranty claims go to the seller and maker; our guarantee is for how it was fitted.

Included in the work

  • Controls, sensors and any safety stop set up and tested
  • Full open and close cycle checked before handover
  • Lifting plan for the unit, often with gear booked for the day
  • Guarding on the terrace — We look at how the roof terrace will be guarded before the rooflight is fitted.
  • Planning for a roof terrace — We flag early whether planning may be needed for the work around the rooflight.

How a fitting day runs

Morning first: the team arrives, introduces itself and walks through the job with you. Dust sheets go down in the room below and along the route in. Then the opening and upstand, or the flashing on a pitched roof, are checked against the unit's measurements. A sliding rooflight goes in, is fixed to the maker's pattern and sealed into the roof covering. Inside, the reveal is finished as quoted. Before leaving, the team clears debris and talks you through what was done. Most jobs of this type take one to two days.

Regulations for Leicester properties

England's rules in short: permitted development usually covers a rooflight on a house roof provided it doesn't stick out more than 0.15 m or rise above the ridge, though a listed building always needs consent and some streets have Article 4 directions. Building regulations apply to new openings, and replacements go through building control; as we are not registered with a competent person scheme, we use a building notice and show the fee on the quote. The energy limit for rooflights in existing homes is 2.2 W/m²K, and the 2026 Approved Document L, in force from 24 March 2027, keeps that figure.

Before you get in touch

Keep it simple. Two or three photos, outside and inside. Approximate sizes. What the roof is made of. Anything awkward about getting up there, such as a conservatory below, a narrow side path or no parking. If you bought the rooflight online, the link or model name. Then your postcode in or around LE1. That is enough for a first price.

Common questions in Leicester

Does a rooflight need building regulations approval?

A new opening usually needs building regulations approval. A replacement is a controlled fitting: it must be self-certified by an installer registered with a competent person scheme or notified to building control. We are not registered with a scheme, so replacements we fit are notified to building control with a building notice, and the council's fee is shown on your quote.

What upstand height and roof pitch does sliding rooflight fitting need?

It depends on the product. Manufacturers usually specify a minimum upstand height above the finished roof surface, and a minimum pitch on the glass so rain runs off. We follow the maker's figures for your unit rather than a rule of thumb. If your existing kerb or roof falls short, we explain the options, such as raising the upstand or choosing a unit with built-in pitch.

Do you need scaffolding to fit a rooflight?

Not always. Single-storey roofs can often be reached safely with ladders, a tower or edge protection. Higher roofs, steep pitches and large units usually need scaffold or a mobile platform, and heavy glass may need a crane. We assess access from your photos or at the survey, and any scaffold or lifting cost is shown as its own line on the written quote.
