Sliding rooflight installation in Portsmouth

Builders and extension firms in Portsmouth often want the rooflight stage of a project handled by a specialist fitting team. We step in once the roof deck or battens are ready, fit a sliding rooflight on your upstand or ours, detail it into the membrane or tiles, and leave the opening ready for the plasterer. Homeowners get exactly the same service directly. In each case the job is quoted in writing first, with any access or lifting needs spelt out. Jobs around PO1 and the neighbouring districts are welcome.

Is your address covered?

Looking at a property near Portsmouth but not quite in it? We work across PO1, PO5 and PO2 and outwards to Southsea, Gosport and Fareham. Give us the full postcode when you get in touch, because access, parking and the route for a large unit all depend on the exact street. Those details shape the quote for any job around Portsmouth.

What we check on a supplied unit

Which works out better, buying your own or letting us supply? It depends on what you value. Buying your own gives you control of the product and what you pay for it. Letting us supply puts the whole job, unit and fitting, under one written quote. On a customer-supplied unit we still measure it against the opening, look at the upstand, and inspect the condition it arrived in. Warranty on the product sits with whoever sold it, while the fitting carries our own guarantee.

What we do on the day

  • Controls, sensors and any safety stop set up and tested
  • Cable routed to the motor, ready for the electrician's final connection, quoted as a separate line
  • Frame fixed and weathered with the membrane dressed up the kerb
  • Planning for a roof terrace — We flag early whether planning may be needed for the work around the rooflight.
  • Power and safety stops — We confirm the power supply and the safety features before fitting day.

What happens on the day

On the day, you need to be in at the start and at the end. In between, the fitters get on with it. They will want the room below cleared where possible, a parking spot if you have one, and somewhere to set the unit down safely. After checking the opening and the upstand or flashing, they fix a sliding rooflight, seal it and finish the inside. Packaging and any old unit leave with them unless the quote says otherwise.

Planning and building rules in England

Two sets of rules matter in England. Planning: a rooflight on a house is normally permitted development if it projects no more than 0.15 m and stays below the highest part of the roof, but flats, listed buildings and Article 4 areas need checking. Building regulations: new openings need approval for the structure and energy performance, and a replacement is a controlled fitting. We are not registered with a competent person scheme, so we notify replacements to building control with a building notice and put the council's fee on the quote.

Before you get in touch

For fit-only work, the product details matter most: the link, the spec sheet, or a photo of the label on the box. Alongside that, send pictures of the roof and the ceiling below, approximate opening sizes, the type of roof covering, and how someone would get onto the roof. For supply and fit, the same photos and sizes do the job. Finish with your postcode, such as PO1.

Common questions in Portsmouth

Can you replace an old dome without redoing the whole roof?

Usually, yes. If the existing kerb is sound, level and tall enough, a new unit can often sit on it with a fresh seal to the roof covering. If the kerb is rotten or too low, we rebuild it and patch the covering around it rather than stripping the whole roof. This is checked at the survey and included in the written quote, so you know the full scope first.

What is included in the price?

The written quote lists it line by line. Typically that covers fitting labour, fixings, sealants, membrane or flashing materials, any upstand work, internal finishing if agreed, and taking away the waste. For supply and fit, the unit itself is included too. Scaffold, lifting gear and any third-party fees, where needed, are shown separately so you can see what each part of the job costs.

Do you need scaffolding to fit a rooflight?

Not always. Single-storey roofs can often be reached safely with ladders, a tower or edge protection. Higher roofs, steep pitches and large units usually need scaffold or a mobile platform, and heavy glass may need a crane. We assess access from your photos or at the survey, and any scaffold or lifting cost is shown as its own line on the written quote.
