Areas around Blackwood we cover
Blackwood and the districts around it, NP12, CF82 and CF81, all sit inside our working area. So does the ground between Blackwood and Gelligaer (2 miles), and on towards Risca (6 miles). When a fitting team is booked, their travel is already in the quoted price, so it does not turn up as a surprise line on the final bill.
Buying your own, or letting us supply
Supply and fit tends to suit people who would rather not pick a unit from a catalogue. We look at the roof, the opening and how you use the room, then put a sliding rooflight on the quote that fits all three. Fit-only suits people who already know what they want, or have one on site. We are happy with either. The difference is who stands behind what: on fit-only, the maker or retailer covers the product, and our workmanship guarantee covers the installation.
What we do on the day
- Cable routed to the motor, ready for the electrician's final connection, quoted as a separate line
- Controls, sensors and any safety stop set up and tested
- Upstand checked for strength, square and level along its full length
- Power and safety stops — We confirm the power supply and the safety features before fitting day.
- Weight and lifting — We plan the lift for a sliding rooflight before it is ordered.
A typical installation day
Morning first: the team arrives, introduces itself and walks through the job with you. Dust sheets go down in the room below and along the route in. Then the opening and upstand, or the flashing on a pitched roof, are checked against the unit's measurements. A sliding rooflight goes in, is fixed to the maker's pattern and sealed into the roof covering. Inside, the reveal is finished as quoted. Before leaving, the team clears debris and talks you through what was done. Most jobs of this type take one to two days.
Regulations for Blackwood properties
Welsh rules differ from England's in one important way: rooflights lose permitted development rights in conservation areas, National Parks, AONBs and World Heritage Sites. Elsewhere on a house, a rooflight that projects no more than 150 mm and stays below the highest part of the roof is usually fine. Building regulations still apply to new openings, replacements we fit go through a building notice because we are not scheme-registered, and the energy limit for rooflights is 2.2 W/m²K. A new Welsh Approved Document L takes effect on 4 March 2027.
Before you get in touch
Each detail you send takes a question off our list. Photos inside and out show the opening and the ceiling. Rough measurements tell us the unit size. The roof covering tells us how it will be sealed in. Access notes tell us whether a tower or scaffold is needed. A product link, if you have one, lets us check it against the opening. Your postcode, NP12 or nearby, confirms travel.
Common questions in Blackwood
Do I need planning permission for a rooflight in Blackwood?
Often not. Many rooflights fall under permitted development, provided they do not project beyond the national limit and meet the other conditions that apply in Wales. Conservation areas, listed buildings and some flats are different and may need consent. Because the rules depend on the property, we confirm what is likely to apply at your address and point you to the planning authority where an application is needed.
Do you make good inside after fitting?
Yes, where the quote includes it. Internal finishing usually means lining the reveal with plasterboard, taping or skimming, and fitting trim where it meets the ceiling. Some people prefer their own plasterer or decorator to finish off, which is fine. The written quote spells out exactly where our work stops, so nobody is left guessing about who does what once the unit is in.
Does a rooflight need building regulations approval?
In Wales a new opening generally needs building regulations approval. A replacement must be self-certified by a scheme-registered installer or covered by a building notice. We are not registered with a scheme, so replacements we fit go through a building notice, and the council's fee is shown on your quote.
Send a few photos and your NP12 postcode, and we will put together a written quote for the job.
