Sliding rooflight installation in Ascot

Rooflight work is weather work. Membranes, primers and sealants all want a dry surface, so a fitting day in Ascot is planned around the forecast rather than pinned to a date regardless of rain. The opening is kept covered whenever it is exposed, and a roof is not left open overnight without a proper temporary seal. That approach applies to every sliding rooflight we install, from a new opening to a straight swap or a fit-only job. We cover Ascot, the SL5 district and the rest of Berkshire.

Covering SL5 and neighbouring districts

If you also own a property or a business unit in Bracknell, Egham or Crowthorne, that is no problem. We can survey and quote both, and where it suits, line the fitting days up together. Every address is reached by fitters travelling to it from their current jobs, and SL5, RG12 and RG42 sit comfortably within that pattern.

Already bought your unit?

A damaged delivery is a frequent snag on fit-only work. Before the day, unpack a sliding rooflight, photograph it, and tell the seller about any cracks or scuffs, because claims are much easier made early. We will also ask for the model or a link, so we can read the maker's instructions and check the builder's opening size and the upstand height it expects. If everything lines up, we fit it. If not, we explain what needs changing first.

What we do on the day

  • Cable routed to the motor, ready for the electrician's final connection, quoted as a separate line
  • Clear run confirmed for the glass to slide over when open
  • Controls, sensors and any safety stop set up and tested
  • Guarding on the terrace — We look at how the roof terrace will be guarded before the rooflight is fitted.
  • Power and safety stops — We confirm the power supply and the safety features before fitting day.

A typical installation day

Protection comes before tools. Floors, furniture and stairs get covered, and the ceiling below the opening is sheeted to catch dust. Up top, the fitters confirm the opening is square and the upstand or flashing suits what the maker specifies. Fixing follows, then weather-sealing into the membrane, felt or tiles. Only once the roof is tight do they turn to the internal reveal. Time on site for a sliding rooflight: one to two days, weather permitting.

Regulations for Ascot properties

England's rules in short: permitted development usually covers a rooflight on a house roof provided it doesn't stick out more than 0.15 m or rise above the ridge, though a listed building always needs consent and some streets have Article 4 directions. Building regulations apply to new openings, and replacements go through building control; as we are not registered with a competent person scheme, we use a building notice and show the fee on the quote. The energy limit for rooflights in existing homes is 2.2 W/m²K, and the 2026 Approved Document L, in force from 24 March 2027, keeps that figure.

Before you get in touch

For fit-only work, the product details matter most: the link, the spec sheet, or a photo of the label on the box. Alongside that, send pictures of the roof and the ceiling below, approximate opening sizes, the type of roof covering, and how someone would get onto the roof. For supply and fit, the same photos and sizes do the job. Finish with your postcode, such as SL5.

Common questions in Ascot

What upstand height and roof pitch does sliding rooflight fitting need?

It depends on the product. Manufacturers usually specify a minimum upstand height above the finished roof surface, and a minimum pitch on the glass so rain runs off. We follow the maker's figures for your unit rather than a rule of thumb. If your existing kerb or roof falls short, we explain the options, such as raising the upstand or choosing a unit with built-in pitch.

How long does fitting take?

Fitting a sliding rooflight into an existing, correctly sized opening is often a day's work. New openings take longer, because joists or rafters need trimming, an upstand or flashing has to be built or fitted, and the inside needs finishing. Large units that need lifting gear, and days lost to rain, can stretch things further. Your written quote gives a realistic estimate for your roof.

Do you need scaffolding to fit a rooflight?

Not always. Single-storey roofs can often be reached safely with ladders, a tower or edge protection. Higher roofs, steep pitches and large units usually need scaffold or a mobile platform, and heavy glass may need a crane. We assess access from your photos or at the survey, and any scaffold or lifting cost is shown as its own line on the written quote.

Send a few photos and your SL5 postcode, and we will put together a written quote for the job.
