Pitched roof window installation in Cwmbran

Rooflight work is weather work. Membranes, primers and sealants all want a dry surface, so a fitting day in Cwmbran is planned around the forecast rather than pinned to a date regardless of rain. The opening is kept covered whenever it is exposed, and a roof is not left open overnight without a proper temporary seal. That approach applies to every pitched roof window we install, from a new opening to a straight swap or a fit-only job. We cover Cwmbran, the NP44 district and the rest of Gwent.

Covering NP44 and neighbouring districts

Covering Cwmbran means covering the people who live and work there, not a single postcode. We take on domestic and commercial jobs in NP44, NP20 and NP4, and are happy to quote further out in Pontypool and Risca. If your address sits between towns, tell us and we will confirm whether it falls in our normal area or needs travel set out separately on the quote.

Fit-only or supply and fit

A damaged delivery is a frequent snag on fit-only work. Before the day, unpack a pitched roof window, photograph it, and tell the seller about any cracks or scuffs, because claims are much easier made early. We will also ask for the model or a link, so we can read the maker's instructions and check the opening size and the flashing kit it expects. If everything lines up, we fit it. If not, we explain what needs changing first.

On the day, we cover

  • Underlay collar or membrane dressed and taped around the frame
  • Window frame fixed on its brackets, square and at the right height
  • Tiles or slates cut and refitted neatly around the flashing
  • Flashing to suit the roof — We match the flashing kit to your roof covering before ordering.
  • Head height and view — We think about how the window will be used from inside before fixing its height.

A typical installation day

Protection comes before tools. Floors, furniture and stairs get covered, and the ceiling below the opening is sheeted to catch dust. Up top, the fitters confirm the opening is square and the upstand or flashing suits what the maker specifies. Fixing follows, then weather-sealing into the membrane, felt or tiles. Only once the roof is tight do they turn to the internal reveal. Time on site for a pitched roof window: one day, weather permitting.

Planning and building rules in Wales

Welsh rules differ from England's in one important way: rooflights lose permitted development rights in conservation areas, National Parks, AONBs and World Heritage Sites. Elsewhere on a house, a rooflight that projects no more than 150 mm and stays below the highest part of the roof is usually fine. Building regulations still apply to new openings, replacements we fit go through a building notice because we are not scheme-registered, and the energy limit for rooflights is 2.2 W/m²K. A new Welsh Approved Document L takes effect on 4 March 2027.

Before you get in touch

Each detail you send takes a question off our list. Photos inside and out show the opening and the ceiling. Rough measurements tell us the unit size. The roof covering tells us how it will be sealed in. Access notes tell us whether a tower or scaffold is needed. A product link, if you have one, lets us check it against the opening. Your postcode, NP44 or nearby, confirms travel.

Common questions in Cwmbran

Does a rooflight need building regulations approval?

In Wales a new opening generally needs building regulations approval. A replacement must be self-certified by a scheme-registered installer or covered by a building notice. We are not registered with a scheme, so replacements we fit go through a building notice, and the council's fee is shown on your quote.

Can you fit a rooflight in winter or when it is raining?

Yes, within limits. Cold is less of a problem than wet, because membranes, primers and sealants need a dry surface to bond. We plan fitting days around the forecast and may move a date if heavy rain is due. If the roof has to be opened up, it is not left overnight without a temporary weather seal, so the room below stays dry while the work is finished.

Do you need scaffolding to fit a rooflight?

Not always. Single-storey roofs can often be reached safely with ladders, a tower or edge protection. Higher roofs, steep pitches and large units usually need scaffold or a mobile platform, and heavy glass may need a crane. We assess access from your photos or at the survey, and any scaffold or lifting cost is shown as its own line on the written quote.

Send a few photos and your NP44 postcode, and we will put together a written quote for the job.
