Loft conversion roof windows in Stockport

Cut the opening. Trim the joists or rafters. Build the upstand or fit the flashing kit. Fix the unit, seal it, finish the inside. On a new opening, that is the whole job in plain terms, and each step has to be right for the next one to work. We carry out this work in Stockport and across Greater Manchester, either installing a unit you have bought or sourcing one for you. You get a written quote with the scope set out, and a written workmanship guarantee on the fitting with its terms on that quote.

Fitting across Stockport and nearby

If you also own a property or a business unit in Bredbury, Hazel Grove or Cheadle Hulme, that is no problem. We can survey and quote both, and where it suits, line the fitting days up together. Every address is reached by fitters travelling to it from their current jobs, and SK1, SK3 and SK4 sit comfortably within that pattern.

Buying your own, or letting us supply

There are two ways to do this. Supply and fit means we source a loft roof window that suits your roof and install it, so one company answers for both the product choice and the fitting. Fit-only means you buy the unit and we install it. With fit-only, the product warranty stays with the maker or seller, and our written guarantee covers the fitting work. Both routes get the same checks on the opening, the upstand and the maker's instructions before anything is fixed.

On the day, we cover

  • Linings fitted, ready for the plasterboarder or decorator
  • Underlay dressed and taped around every frame
  • Window positions set out on the slope to line up inside and out
  • Balcony-style windows — We check the rafters and the roof pitch before recommending balcony-style windows.
  • Fitting stage and weather — We plan when the windows go in around the rest of the conversion.

What happens on the day

Where a job takes one to two days, the split is usually structural work first and finishing second. Early on, the fitters cut or prepare the opening, trim where needed and prepare the upstand or flashing. Then a loft roof window is lifted in, fixed and made weathertight so the roof is sound before anyone moves inside. Plasterboard, trim and filler for the reveal come after. Each evening the work area is swept, and at the end the glass is cleaned and the team talks you through what was done.

Do you need permission in Stockport?

In England, a new rooflight opening generally needs building regulations approval because the roof structure is altered and the glazing must meet energy rules: 2.2 W/m²K for a rooflight in an existing home, or 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B) for a roof window. Planning is often not needed on a house: permitted development covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof slope and sit below the highest part of the roof. Flats, listed buildings and areas with an Article 4 direction are different, so we check your address first.

Help us quote accurately

Keep it simple. Two or three photos, outside and inside. Approximate sizes. What the roof is made of. Anything awkward about getting up there, such as a conservatory below, a narrow side path or no parking. If you bought the rooflight online, the link or model name. Then your postcode in or around SK1. That is enough for a first price.

Common questions in Stockport

Can you remove and dispose of the old rooflight?

Yes. Taking out the old unit is part of any replacement job, and it leaves with the rest of the waste unless you ask to keep it. Old domes, glass and frames go through proper waste routes. If removal turns up a rotten kerb or damaged decking, we show you what we have found and agree the repair with you before going any further.

Do you make good inside after fitting?

Yes, where the quote includes it. Internal finishing usually means lining the reveal with plasterboard, taping or skimming, and fitting trim where it meets the ceiling. Some people prefer their own plasterer or decorator to finish off, which is fine. The written quote spells out exactly where our work stops, so nobody is left guessing about who does what once the unit is in.

Can you fit the loft roof window I bought online?

Yes, fit-only is one of our core services. Send the product link or spec, photos of the roof and rough sizes, and we can usually price it from those. Before fitting we check the delivery for damage, which should be reported to the seller, plus the size against the opening, the flashing kit and the roof pitch. The product warranty stays with the maker or seller, and our guarantee covers the fitting.
