Towns we list in Argyll & Bute
Coverage in Argyll & Bute works by postcode, not by distance from an office. Give us the full postcode and we will confirm whether it is standard cover, as it is for most of Scotland, or one of the few remote and island areas handled by arrangement. Either way, you get a written quote before any work is booked, with travel included in the price.
Argyll's islands, and some remote mainland addresses, are covered by arrangement, with travel and any ferry costs priced into the quote before you commit.
What we do on the day
- Window positions set out on the slope to line up inside and out
- Rafters trimmed and doubled where the openings need them
- Insulation collars fitted so the room's insulation meets each frame
- Combination flashings — We order combination flashings where windows sit close together.
- Approved loft drawings — We work to the window positions on your approved loft drawings or agree changes with your builder first.
Rules that apply in Scotland
For Scottish homes: building warrant for new rooflight openings; no warrant for replacing a rooflight complete with its frame, provided it meets the standards, including 1.6 W/m²K; planning permission in conservation areas and listed building consent for listed properties. Outside those, permitted development usually covers house rooflights, but the planning authority has the final word, so we check before you commit.
Common questions in Argyll & Bute
How long does fitting take?
Fitting a loft roof window into an existing, correctly sized opening is often a day's work. New openings take longer, because joists or rafters need trimming, an upstand or flashing has to be built or fitted, and the inside needs finishing. Large units that need lifting gear, and days lost to rain, can stretch things further. Your written quote gives a realistic estimate for your roof.
Can you remove and dispose of the old rooflight?
Yes. Taking out the old unit is part of any replacement job, and it leaves with the rest of the waste unless you ask to keep it. Old domes, glass and frames go through proper waste routes. If removal turns up a rotten kerb or damaged decking, we show you what we have found and agree the repair with you before going any further.
Does a rooflight need a building warrant?
In Scotland a new rooflight needs a building warrant from the council before work starts. Replacing a rooflight complete with its frame doesn't need a warrant, but the new unit must meet the building standards in full, including 1.6 W/m²K. We confirm which applies to your job before you commit.
