Frameless rooflight installation in Windsor

Rooflight work is weather work. Membranes, primers and sealants all want a dry surface, so a fitting day in Windsor is planned around the forecast rather than pinned to a date regardless of rain. The opening is kept covered whenever it is exposed, and a roof is not left open overnight without a proper temporary seal. That approach applies to every frameless rooflight we install, from a new opening to a straight swap or a fit-only job. We cover Windsor, the SL4 district and the rest of Berkshire.

Covering SL4 and neighbouring districts

Fitters travel to the job, so the address is what counts. In Windsor that means postcode districts SL4, SL3 and SL1, and the same teams can just as easily take on work in Slough, about 2 miles away, or Egham at roughly 4 miles. Survey and fitting dates are offered according to fitter availability, and travel is built into the quote rather than added later.

Your frameless rooflights or ours

A damaged delivery is a frequent snag on fit-only work. Before the day, unpack a frameless rooflight, photograph it, and tell the seller about any cracks or scuffs, because claims are much easier made early. We will also ask for the model or a link, so we can read the maker's instructions and check the builder's opening size and the upstand height it expects. If everything lines up, we fit it. If not, we explain what needs changing first.

What we do on the day

  • Fall set in the upstand so rain clears the oversailing glass edge
  • Kerb squared across the diagonals before the glass is ordered or fitted
  • Roof covering turned up and finished under the glass overhang
  • Tolerance on the upstand — We build frameless kerbs to the maker's tolerance rather than to normal carpentry accuracy.
  • Drainage at the overhang — We check how water leaves the glass where it oversails the kerb.

How a fitting day runs

Morning first: the team arrives, introduces itself and walks through the job with you. Dust sheets go down in the room below and along the route in. Then the opening and upstand, or the flashing on a pitched roof, are checked against the unit's measurements. A frameless rooflight goes in, is fixed to the maker's pattern and sealed into the roof covering. Inside, the reveal is finished as quoted. Before leaving, the team clears debris and talks you through what was done. Most jobs of this type take one day.

Planning, building control and Windsor

England's rules in short: permitted development usually covers a rooflight on a house roof provided it doesn't stick out more than 0.15 m or rise above the ridge, though a listed building always needs consent and some streets have Article 4 directions. Building regulations apply to new openings, and replacements go through building control; as we are not registered with a competent person scheme, we use a building notice and show the fee on the quote. The energy limit for rooflights in existing homes is 2.2 W/m²K, and the 2026 Approved Document L, in force from 24 March 2027, keeps that figure.

Before you get in touch

Start with your phone. Take a picture of the roof where the unit goes or already sits, then one from inside looking up. Measure what you can, even roughly. Tell us what the roof is covered with and how a fitter would reach it: ladder, garden access or scaffold. Bought it already? Send the link or spec. Add your full postcode, for example in SL4, and we can price it.

Common questions in Windsor

Do you cover Windsor?

Yes. Fitters travel to addresses in Windsor and the surrounding districts, including SL4. We do not run an office there; the survey and the fitting happen at your property. A few island and remote postcodes are covered by arrangement; if yours is one, we confirm travel and dates before quoting.

Do I need planning permission for a rooflight in Windsor?

Often not. Many rooflights fall under permitted development, provided they do not project beyond the national limit and meet the other conditions that apply in England. Conservation areas, listed buildings and some flats are different and may need consent. Because the rules depend on the property, we confirm what is likely to apply at your address and point you to the planning authority where an application is needed.

Does a rooflight need building regulations approval?

A new opening usually needs building regulations approval. A replacement is a controlled fitting: it must be self-certified by an installer registered with a competent person scheme or notified to building control. We are not registered with a scheme, so replacements we fit are notified to building control with a building notice, and the council's fee is shown on your quote.

Tell us your postcode, SL4 or close by, and what you want fitted. We will reply with the next steps and a quote.
