Conservation rooflight installation in Salisbury

Rooflight work is weather work. Membranes, primers and sealants all want a dry surface, so a fitting day in Salisbury is planned around the forecast rather than pinned to a date regardless of rain. The opening is kept covered whenever it is exposed, and a roof is not left open overnight without a proper temporary seal. That approach applies to every conservation rooflight we install, from a new opening to a straight swap or a fit-only job. We cover Salisbury, the SP1 district and the rest of Wiltshire.

Guide ranges for supply & fit. Your price is fixed in a written quote after we have seen photos or surveyed. Scaffold, access towers or a crane are priced separately if the job needs them, and building control fees, where a job needs them, are shown as their own line.

Is your address covered?

Distance is rarely the deciding factor. A roof in Romsey, 14 miles from Salisbury, gets the same survey, the same written quote and the same fitting process as one in SP1, SP2 and SP5. What changes the price is the job itself: size of unit, roof type, access and lifting. Andover, around 16 miles out, is treated the same way.

What we check on a supplied unit

Which works out better, buying your own or letting us supply? It depends on what you value. Buying your own gives you control of the product and what you pay for it. Letting us supply puts the whole job, unit and fitting, under one written quote. On a customer-supplied unit we still measure it against the opening, look at the upstand, and inspect the condition it arrived in. Warranty on the product sits with whoever sold it, while the fitting carries our own guarantee.

On the day, we cover

  • Position checked against any consent drawings or council conditions
  • Slates or tiles made good around the frame with tidy cuts
  • Slates or tiles lifted carefully and kept for reuse where possible
  • Reusing the original covering — We plan to reuse the existing slates or tiles wherever we can.
  • Energy and old roofs — We make sure the rooflight meets current energy rules while suiting an older roof build-up.

A typical installation day

Morning first: the team arrives, introduces itself and walks through the job with you. Dust sheets go down in the room below and along the route in. Then the opening and upstand, or the flashing on a pitched roof, are checked against the unit's measurements. A conservation rooflight goes in, is fixed to the maker's pattern and sealed into the roof covering. Inside, the reveal is finished as quoted. Before leaving, the team clears debris and talks you through what was done. Most jobs of this type take one day.

Do you need permission in Salisbury?

England's rules in short: permitted development usually covers a rooflight on a house roof provided it doesn't stick out more than 0.15 m or rise above the ridge, though a listed building always needs consent and some streets have Article 4 directions. Building regulations apply to new openings, and replacements go through building control; as we are not registered with a competent person scheme, we use a building notice and show the fee on the quote. The energy limit for rooflights in existing homes is 2.2 W/m²K, and the 2026 Approved Document L, in force from 24 March 2027, keeps that figure.

Help us quote accurately

What we cannot see, we have to guess, and guesses make quotes wider. So the more you send, the tighter the price. Useful: shots from the roof or garden, shots from the room underneath, a rough width and length, the roof finish, any access problems, and the product page if you have already ordered. Add the property postcode around SP1 and we will come back with a quote or a survey date.

Common questions in Salisbury

Will my new conservation rooflight leak?

A correctly fitted unit should not. Leaks usually trace back to the detail around the frame: an upstand that is too low, a membrane or flashing that is not dressed properly, sealant applied to a damp surface, or water ponding against the kerb. We fit to the maker's instructions and check each of those points. The fitting carries a written workmanship guarantee, with its terms set out on your quote.

Do you need scaffolding to fit a rooflight?

Not always. Single-storey roofs can often be reached safely with ladders, a tower or edge protection. Higher roofs, steep pitches and large units usually need scaffold or a mobile platform, and heavy glass may need a crane. We assess access from your photos or at the survey, and any scaffold or lifting cost is shown as its own line on the written quote.

What if my roof opening is the wrong size for the conservation rooflight?

We find out before the fitting day, not on it. If the opening is slightly out, it can usually be adjusted by trimming or by packing out the upstand. If it is a long way off, the choice is between altering the opening and changing the unit. Bear in mind that rooflights are often sold by builder's opening size rather than external size, so check which one your measurement refers to.
