Conservation rooflight installation in Heavitree

Rooflight work is weather work. Membranes, primers and sealants all want a dry surface, so a fitting day in Heavitree is planned around the forecast rather than pinned to a date regardless of rain. The opening is kept covered whenever it is exposed, and a roof is not left open overnight without a proper temporary seal. That approach applies to every conservation rooflight we install, from a new opening to a straight swap or a fit-only job. We cover Heavitree, the EX1 district and the rest of Devon.

Is your address covered?

Covering Heavitree means covering the people who live and work there, not a single postcode. We take on domestic and commercial jobs in EX1, EX2 and EX4, and are happy to quote further out in Exeter and Exmouth. If your address sits between towns, tell us and we will confirm whether it falls in our normal area or needs travel set out separately on the quote.

Already bought your unit?

Which works out better, buying your own or letting us supply? It depends on what you value. Buying your own gives you control of the product and what you pay for it. Letting us supply puts the whole job, unit and fitting, under one written quote. On a customer-supplied unit we still measure it against the opening, look at the upstand, and inspect the condition it arrived in. Warranty on the product sits with whoever sold it, while the fitting carries our own guarantee.

On the day, we cover

  • Flashings in lead or a matching kit, dressed to the covering
  • Slates or tiles made good around the frame with tidy cuts
  • Slates or tiles lifted carefully and kept for reuse where possible
  • Energy and old roofs — We make sure the rooflight meets current energy rules while suiting an older roof build-up.
  • Conservation area rules by nation — We check the permitted development position for your nation before the rooflight is ordered.

What happens on the day

Arrive and agree the plan. Sheet the floor and furniture. Set up the ladder, tower or scaffold. Check the opening, the upstand or flashing, and the unit against the paperwork. Fix and pack a conservation rooflight level. Seal it into the roof. Line the reveal or fit the ceiling trim. Clean the glass, clear the waste, and talk you through it. That is the shape of most fitting days, and for this type of job it usually takes one day.

Do you need permission in Heavitree?

In England, a new rooflight opening generally needs building regulations approval because the roof structure is altered and the glazing must meet energy rules: 2.2 W/m²K for a rooflight in an existing home, or 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B) for a roof window. Planning is often not needed on a house: permitted development covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof slope and sit below the highest part of the roof. Flats, listed buildings and areas with an Article 4 direction are different, so we check your address first.

Details that speed up your quote

Start with your phone. Take a picture of the roof where the unit goes or already sits, then one from inside looking up. Measure what you can, even roughly. Tell us what the roof is covered with and how a fitter would reach it: ladder, garden access or scaffold. Bought it already? Send the link or spec. Add your full postcode, for example in EX1, and we can price it.

Common questions in Heavitree

What if my roof opening is the wrong size for the conservation rooflight?

We find out before the fitting day, not on it. If the opening is slightly out, it can usually be adjusted by trimming or by packing out the upstand. If it is a long way off, the choice is between altering the opening and changing the unit. Bear in mind that rooflights are often sold by builder's opening size rather than external size, so check which one your measurement refers to.

Can you fit the conservation rooflight I bought online?

Yes, fit-only is one of our core services. Send the product link or spec, photos of the roof and rough sizes, and we can usually price it from those. Before fitting we check the delivery for damage, which should be reported to the seller, plus the size against the opening, the flashing kit and the roof pitch. The product warranty stays with the maker or seller, and our guarantee covers the fitting.

Can you fit a rooflight in winter or when it is raining?

Yes, within limits. Cold is less of a problem than wet, because membranes, primers and sealants need a dry surface to bond. We plan fitting days around the forecast and may move a date if heavy rain is due. If the roof has to be opened up, it is not left overnight without a temporary weather seal, so the room below stays dry while the work is finished.

Send a few photos and your EX1 postcode, and we will put together a written quote for the job.
