Walk-on rooflight installation in Nelson

Rooflight work is weather work. Membranes, primers and sealants all want a dry surface, so a fitting day in Nelson is planned around the forecast rather than pinned to a date regardless of rain. The opening is kept covered whenever it is exposed, and a roof is not left open overnight without a proper temporary seal. That approach applies to every walk-on rooflight we install, from a new opening to a straight swap or a fit-only job. We cover Nelson, the BB9 district and the rest of Lancashire.

Fitting across Nelson and nearby

Our fitters come to you. For Nelson that covers BB9, BB8 and BB10, plus nearby Colne and Burnley. We do not keep a yard or showroom in the area, and you do not need to visit one. The survey happens at your property or, for fit-only work, from the photos you send. Dates follow fitter availability, which we confirm when you accept the quote.

Already bought your unit?

There are two ways to do this. Supply and fit means we source a walk-on rooflight that suits your roof and install it, so one company answers for both the product choice and the fitting. Fit-only means you buy the unit and we install it. With fit-only, the product warranty stays with the maker or seller, and our written guarantee covers the fitting work. Both routes get the same checks on the opening, the upstand and the maker's instructions before anything is fixed.

What we do on the day

  • Lifting plan for the unit, including people or gear for the day
  • Unit bedded and fixed so it sits level with the finished surface
  • Protective film removed and the anti-slip surface left clean
  • Units tested to old standards — We check which standard the walk-on unit has been tested to.
  • Structural calculations — We need structural calculations for the glass and its support before a walk-on job goes ahead.

From arrival to clean-up

Fitting days start with a look at the sky. If rain is due, the order of work changes so the roof is never left open to it. A typical day for a walk-on rooflight runs like this: set up access, protect the room, open up the roof or prepare the existing kerb or frame, check sizes, fix, seal, then finish inside. On jobs that take more than a day, the opening is weather-sealed overnight. The last hour goes on tidying, waste removal and a walk-round with you.

Do you need permission in Nelson?

In England, a new rooflight opening generally needs building regulations approval because the roof structure is altered and the glazing must meet energy rules: 2.2 W/m²K for a rooflight in an existing home, or 1.4 W/m²K (or WER Band B) for a roof window. Planning is often not needed on a house: permitted development covers rooflights that stand no more than 0.15 m proud of the roof slope and sit below the highest part of the roof. Flats, listed buildings and areas with an Article 4 direction are different, so we check your address first.

What to send for a quick quote

A fast quote needs five things: a photo of the roof from outside, one from the room below, rough sizes of the opening or the space, the roof covering (felt, single-ply, fibreglass, tiles, slate or metal), and a note on access. If you have already bought the unit, add the product link or spec sheet. And give us the postcode, BB9 or a neighbouring district.

Common questions in Nelson

Does a rooflight need building regulations approval?

A new opening usually needs building regulations approval. A replacement is a controlled fitting: it must be self-certified by an installer registered with a competent person scheme or notified to building control. We are not registered with a scheme, so replacements we fit are notified to building control with a building notice, and the council's fee is shown on your quote.

Do you need scaffolding to fit a rooflight?

Not always. Single-storey roofs can often be reached safely with ladders, a tower or edge protection. Higher roofs, steep pitches and large units usually need scaffold or a mobile platform, and heavy glass may need a crane. We assess access from your photos or at the survey, and any scaffold or lifting cost is shown as its own line on the written quote.

Can you remove and dispose of the old rooflight?

Yes. Taking out the old unit is part of any replacement job, and it leaves with the rest of the waste unless you ask to keep it. Old domes, glass and frames go through proper waste routes. If removal turns up a rotten kerb or damaged decking, we show you what we have found and agree the repair with you before going any further.

Got a unit waiting to go in, or need one sourced? Either way, start with your Nelson address and a couple of photos.
